25-20 85gr plinking loads

I have a old remington pump and a bunch of 85gr cast bullets.

Just for your information, there is a very lengthy thread on MarlinOwners.com. Chock full of great info. From that source, (35 Remington), I tried 6.5 grains of IMR 4227 with the RCBS 25-85-CM, shot as cast, tumble lubed with BLL. Accurate in both a Win. Lo-Wall and a Win. 1892 Rifle. Very satisfactory.

My best plinker load was with the thin jacketed Remington 86 grainers.
Unique worked real well. Here's all the data I have at hand from 1993.

I'm shooting the 25-20 in a Jeffrey Rook Rifle. It won't take the higher pressures of the '92, the low wall or the Husky bolt actions. My load for my rifle is 7 grs. of Re-7 with an open cell foam filler. Cuts bug holes.

Such a sweet, trim little rifle! This 25 has been refinished but it’s a great little shooter that I need to use more, it’s going on my next gopher shoot.

That will be fun, mine go out for groundhog walks in the spring. Rifle is not in as good a shape as yours, the carbine is about the same. I sure wish they made something of comparable quality now. Light, handy and accurate!

Yes, sadly very few of today's factory fire arms come close to this kind of quality....

My 92 likes 6.5 gr 2400 with an 86 gr cast.
I use pistol primers.
I spent most of yesterday casting boolits from a couple of new to me molds.
One is a 257420. The other is 257412.
It`s time to work up some serious loads...dale

I'm shooting an original '94 Marlin that likes 9.2gr 4198 and a NOE 260283 at just under 1300 fps. I can go much heavier, but with a rifle well over 100 years old, why take chances. With my alloy this bullet comes out to about 88 grains. This one has been sleeved with a bit faster than standard twist rate. Out of all the powders I've tried it likes 4198 best. Either brand seems to work the same.

I have a savage bolt action 25-20 with a 1/16 twist and I have not found it to be accurate with 86gr cast. However it is accurate with 86 gr J's and with 65 gr Cast.

It would be interesting to see your results with 86 gr Cast

My 85 gr 25-20 mould is the 257285HP. It is a PB mould so I don't drive it hard in my Savage with a 16" twist. My "plinking/small game load is 2.7 gr Bullseye which runs it at 1100 fps giving 1 - 1.5" accuracy at 50 yards. The bullets are cast soft of 30 or 20-1 alloy. Cases are NS'd R-Ps with WSP primers. Makes for an excellent squirrel load.

As with atr my Savage prefers the GC'd 65 gr 257420 which can be driven to 1850 - 1900 fps with excellent accuracy at 100 yards. The Speer 75 gr FP is also and excellent bullet in my rifle over 11 gr H4227 at 1860 fps.
