Thought I'd get Monday started off on a controversial note....

Our Georgia deer season is winding down. The rifle opener I marked by killing an eight point with a 1894 carbine, 30WCF, DOB 1941, and a 150g HCHP boolit. Last evening I closed it with an 1892 SRC, .32-20, DOB 1912. Load was 115g HCHP over a max load of 4227. Finally had a doe come into a range I thought the little cartridge could handle.

It did: 45 yard shot just behind the shoulder. She trotted off perhaps forty yards and tipped over.

As others here have noted, a hollow point boolit acts much like a Nosler Partition. The entrance hole was much more significant than the pencil-sized exit, indicating the hollow point portion mushroomed out and broke away.

Trust this finds all safe in the New Year--

Nice going! What mold for your 32WCF, I have a 311313 with 2 hp cavities I've considered trying. Kust have to be sure there is enough bullet left over after/if the petals shed. I like them shallow, just enough to start to upset, and equal sn/sb for sticktogetherness!

Must confess I do not cast, but the cavity is rather deep. The boolit I used was from GT, relatively soft at 2-2-96. I drove it about as hard as possible. Link attached, perhaps it can be of help.

Well done, sir! Some years back I did some terminal ballistics tests with my Contender 32/20 at 30 yards and an mv of 1350 with a 115 gr RFGC. I concluded it would work just fine for deer under 150# at under 60 yards. Since I hunt with a muzzleloader, I have never tested the theory myself. Thanks for the picture and congratulations on that fine table fare.

I have not doubt that combination killed your deer sufficiently. I have an old T/C Cherokee in .32 that I started out using the TC Maxi Balls 3 decads ago. Those really walloped squirrels and I knew if a deer were to be shot with one up to 50 yards it should do the trick, too. I never did as Ohio only allows .38 or larger for deer hunting with a Mzlder. I quickly moved on to patched round balls for the squirrels but did have fun with the Maxi Balls. Hollow point one of those a bit and over 20 grains of blackpowder you have a 32-20 single shot.

Well done and congrats. The 32-20 will remain one of my favorite cartridges until God calls me home.

I had my doubts about using the 32-20 on deer even though it's killed how many only the good Lord knows. That was until when visiting with a good friend he told me his brother had been using a 32-20 for 40+ years. I questioned Ray on its use and he told me his brother picked his shot and only shot if the deer was within about 50 yards and facing him. Said he "aimed for the white spot" and to his knowledge had never lost one. I never doubted the 32-20's capability again when used judiciously.....as you obviously did. Again, well done!!!

Shot placement rules. The 32-20 was widely used for deer decades ago and deer haven't gotten any harder to kill. I salute you.

I've got two problems:

1. California going fully lead-free for hunting with the 2019.

2. My primary hunting zone is a 3% success rate area. Fun to hunt, but you have to work for 'em, and that tends to drive one toward cartridges with more reach.

But if not for those items, I would SOOOOOOO be trying to kill deer with my kinda, sorta, not exactly .32-20:





Aussie Martini Cadet in which some clever being ran a .32-20 reamer into the original .3185" bore, so you end up with a .32-20 for which you don't use your sizing die. I added the Parker Hale on the back and 17A up front. Had Veral Smith cut me a 130 grain mold from a pound cast I sent him, and have that puppy running about 1600 fps. The pic of the expanded one and it's neighbor were early milk jug tests at only 1250 fps - hard W.Q.W.W. and 20-1. 9 jugs for the hard stuff and 4 for the soft. No worries about the round for sensible shots on deer at all!

And I'm not sure why I've inadvertently attached this thumbnail of a 452423 in a .45 Colt case. . .
