Used to hunt them when I lived in Ohio. Loved it. Out here all we have is nasty ground squirrels. I don’t know how they would eat. Never got the nerve up to try them. Me and the boys trap and kill a ton in the garden.
Her in Florida we have greys the size of red squirrels in Michigan. Take a dozen to get a meal!

My mother in law had them getting in her roof and attic and asked if I would come over and shoot them. She lived outside city limits, but in a neighborhood. I got there with my scoped 10-22 and just walked around her yard and shot them. In 2 days I got over 20! I ate squirrel for a while. I brought BBQed squirrel to work for my buddies multiple times. I don't mind eating it and have eaten quite a bit of it.
I used to shoot them in city limits in GA with a pellet pistol. I would eat those too. More than once I found more than one airgun pellet in the squirrel. They are tough critters and die hard.
You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.
Got the day off today, think I may take the little 241 out again. I would think a short only rifle, a short walk, for a short while should make up for shooting long tailed tasty greys

I hunt them with a lot of things but my favorite is a Savage 219 with a small Burris 4X scope in .22 Hornet which I download with a 45 grain WFN cast. Lots of fun. They do eat pretty good too, I need to get out and shoot a few before the season closes in February.
That's pretty cool. Must take a talented taxidermist to do a squirrel and make it look good.
When I was about 17, we moved into a big house in the city that had about a half acre back yard that was the remains of a pecan orchard, maybe 30 mature trees in rows. Had a city ball park to the back of the property that wa almost never used, a synagogue on one side which hardly ever had anybody around and a house on the other side which was boarded out to college students but had high hedges and they never cared about anything anyway. Dad got me an RWS air rifle, pretty basic .177 springer, but I did some of the best squirrel hunting on my life right there in the backyard inside city limits. Air rifles are cool and I have killed a few since then with my Sheridans and a few years before that, an old Crossman CO2 .22 caliber air rifle from the '60s I have. They will certainly get the job done if you the shooter are up to it.
Hands down, every day. More action and better eating. My favorite rifle for squirrels is my 36 cal., Southern Mountain flinter in 36 cal. However, I have a Jeffrey Rook rifle that's been relined and re-chambered to 25-20 WCF which I load to 255 Jeffrey ballistics and, it's becoming a favorite. The wife and I both love squirrel and frankly, I'd rather have squirrel as chicken.

Squirrel hunting isn't crowded around my area anymore. Not many of new generations hunting them. Early season when leaves are still on I use 25/20 or 32/20. Late season a Ruger 77/22 with scope shots are futher when the leaves drop. Me & Bro also use 22 handguns a good bit, K22s.
We have a couple of nearby towns that have all black squirrels. Very cute and very large. I am told they are mean but have no experience.
Where I live we have what appears to be a gray/fox cross breed in the yard. Not just one squirrel, but all of them here. They have the size and other characteristics of grays but some of the coloring of fox squirrels.
Just outside of town to the south are regular fox squirrels. Just east and north of town regular gray squirrels. Maybe the ones here in town made friends.
We had a mulberry tree in back with a cinderblock garage 2 feet behind my chain link fence. Used my Sheridan 5mm pellet rifle or .22 Calibris when they got to the middle of fence. Good eating after pigging out on mulberries.
They liked digging in potted plants to kill them, then dropping them off my porch. Also repaid me for feeding them birdseed by chewing into the pail and taking a big bite out of my porch railing. Then broke through my soffit into the attic, through the floor, into my drop ceiling, breaking out into my living room and kitchen. They declared war, and I brought down the wrath of Scott! I won. Now I’ve got a Dixie poor boy .32 caplock. Have to break her in on tree rats .

About 25-30 years ago, I wrote a letter to my state wildlife dept. asking them to extend our squirrel hunting season by 1 month, from the end of Jan. until the end of Feb..
That was because our neighboring state of Rhode Island had a squirrel season that lasted until the end of Feb..
They wrote back that they would not support changing it because of "winter squirrel mortality" which would cause the squirrel population to decline.
Then a few years later, sure enough they changed the regulations to extend our squirrel hunting season until the end of Feb. and it's been that way ever since.
I figured that my letter got someone's attention and they just filed it away until they were ready to make the change.

As I said I like squirrel hunting more than deer hunting, but still like the idea of one shot and a freezer full of meat is on the ground.
When I lived in GA and hunted frequently I often got ridiculed by the "deer hunters" for wanting to squirrel hunt. They told me it was for kids. When I would go to the WMA near my house for small game season I was the only one there more than not. I had free reign of the place. I knew where there were hardwood stands and bottoms where I could limit out. Bag a few bunnies too.

I enjoy deer hunting but admit that I am pretty terrible at it. I get a deer about once every three years on average. Hunted squirrels alot as a kid and was pretty good at it. I never cared for the way they taste but that could have been due to how they were cooked. I think I'll get back to squirrel hunting next season, it's too much fun not to do.

When I go squirrelin, I don’t see a sea of orange that shoot at anything moving that’s brown . I feel much safer than when on public land for deer !

I am another who would rather squirrel hunt than deer hunt. I also love the flavor of the meat, pan fried or in a stew. Grew up hunting them with 22 rifles, get close and hold a fine bead! Great times in the woods, and I can carry the fruits of the hunt in my pocket

Squirrel was the first game animal I ever hunted. Took my first one with a head shot from a Winchester 72a using iron sights when I was 10 years old. Still have the rifle.
I have no idea how many hundreds of squirrels I have taken and eaten over the years. Love the taste.
