    Short squirrel hunt

I was able to go out for a short squirrel hunt this afternoon and took my Henry. I'm the only one that eats em at my house so two was enough although I saw quite a few. I really enjoy being in the woods this time of year as you pretty well have the woods all to yourself. Plus the leaves are all down and it makes it nice using a non scoped 22rf.

Very nice. That's my favorite kind of hunting. That looks like a fun gun to hunt with too.

Why are the squirrels in central WV short?
    Duckin' and runnin'.

I need to do exactly what you did except with a 510 Remington. Love me some squirrels.

Aren`t those short squirrels harder to hit than the tall ones?

Thanks for the picturesBrad. I loved to squirrel hunt in the 40' & 50's when I was a youngster. There was one little area on a mountain near us that had a good population of Black Fox Squirrels and those are the ones that I really liked to hunt. They were quite a bit larger than Grey's or even the Red Fox Squirrels. They were usually mostly black with a little red showing on their legs or chests. Once in a while you would run into one that was all black and I mean coal black all over except a white tipped ear or nose. These were just beautiful squirrels. My dad had one mounted for years but then the hair started slipping out of the skin and he finally threw it in the trash. His was black all over except a small white spot over each eye and a white tipped nose. Those were very good days and I often remember them. Getting old I guess, I keep bringing up those old days. james

Love biscuits & squirrel gravy almost as much as my squirrel rifles. Don't hunt squirrels anymore, just feed them.

I put corn on that 13" plate that squirrel is sleeping on. The pallet is 48" wide. I'd need a plunger to get that sucker in the crockpot.

Glad you go out & enjoy time in the woods with your 22lr.

I prefer squirrel hunting to deer hunting....
You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.

I love to squirrel hunt, but the wife always gives me a hard time. "I love to watch them, don't shoot themm!", etc...

    I still enjoy it!

    Thanks fellas.

Forrest r, I feed them here at the house too. I'm sure my yard squirrels venture into the area I hunt but I won't shoot one in the yard. I enjoy watching them from our sun porch, they do put on quite the show.

As much as I enjoy hunting them my wife is not much of a fan when it comes to eating them. I always gave them to a neighbor, but he passed a couple of years ago and I haven't found anyone who is interested so I just put the crosshairs on them, think to myself 'bang', and consider it a kill.

    Short squirrel hunt

My shortest squirrel hunt was in my kitchen and living room. They’re hard to hit in drop ceilings! Then I found and closed the hole in my soffit after I ate them.

I used to keep a log of when and where I harvested squirrels and still remember the spot where I saw a black one that got away.
Then saved up a bunch of tails over the years and sent them to Mepps so they could make fishing lures with them.
They used to pay .25 cents each and still do buy them.

I also rescued one that got nipped by a dog at the local park and injured its leg or hip.
Took it to a wildlife rehabilitator until it got better when she said that they would let it go, after about 4-6 weeks.

Once while deer hunting, I was watching a squirrel scurrying around looking for food.
Then a little while later, a big bird of prey swooped in and grabbed it with it's talons and it flew off right in front
of me with the squirrel screeching bloody murder at the top of its lungs as it was flying off into the distance.
They're better off getting shot then to meet that fate.

I'm with Hawks feather I get up and go out ever opening morning of squirrel season and sit under my favorite hickory with me 22lr. Watch the squirrels for a couple of hours then head home without firing a shot. Bow season ends here in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to getting the 32 muzzleloader out and getting a few for the grill. I would hunt them everyday if I knew someone how would eat them.
