    Ammo Boxes

Does anybody make a good plastic ammo box that holds a 45-70 base case with the boolit up? I realize that there are some nice wood ones out there but I'm not up for the price or weight of those authentic boxes.

I make my own out of chunks of firewood. If you buy the wood precut, the minimum wood cutting tool would be a drill press. Forstner bits work the best.Click image for larger version.

What quantity size case are you looking for?

And the intended purpose in holding them base down?

Bob the plastic boxes for the 300wsm will hold 45-70 cases with the base down.
Long range rules, the rest drool.

Bore size PP boolits. I would prefer 100rd boxes but 50 will work.

Thanks Don I will look for those.

If you don't mind using a bunch of 20 round boxes instead, there is a company called J&J Products that makes a 20 round box that will hold any length .45 cal round base down. They are much higher quality than the MTM boxes.

Bob you have to watch closely, it's best if you can look at them in the store. There are 2 lengths of those boxes, the long ones work really well with the 44-77 and 45-90, but make digging empty 45-70 cases out a real pain. Depending on the overall length of your loaded 45-70 round the short ones may have a heck of a time snapping the lid shut.
Long range rules, the rest drool.

I used a old tin lunch box with wood blocks like upnorthwis photo for many years and you can double stack them if you need a lot of ammo

Hi. I use an MTM Flip top Case Guard 50 for my .45-70 base down. Here is the model and some pics. Another benefit is this box has real hinges, not the "live" hinge that's part of the molded box and subject to cracking/breaking. I think Berry's also makes a box that would work, but I'm not sure if it holds the rounds base down. Hope this helps. Ed

ETA: RFD has the correct box from Berry's. I don't think the one I referenced allows you to keep .45-70 base-down. Ed

I believe that is the box that I'm looking at on Midway's site.
Good point Don but my cases usually go right into a jug of water and Dawn after they are fired.

Berry's box works fine. They also have one long enough for the 45-90.
I also use a still larger box made for rounds as large as the .50-90 but it works ok for the 50-70.
