45-70 gallery loads

Thanks for all the help guys. I can't afford a $100 mold right now to mess around with gallery loads. Think just for the heck of it I'll load up 5gr unique put a small piece of cotton balls on top to keep it in place. May not need it but won't hurt. Than a .457 round ball what's the worst could happen...I hit what I aim at at 25yrds.

Your load is fine for gallery shoots. But I'm with Hamish on this... don't use the filler.

The Noe collar button mould works very well when fired with light charges from my Handi 45-70 I haven't tried them in my Henry. I hear you about the cost of a mould for just a gallery load. Gp

Yep NO fillers I just tilt the muzzle up slightly and give the rifle a good rearward shake to be sure the powder is close to the primer.

Thanks guys no filler going in. I've never used any in any other unique loads before what was I thinking. Now to just go in the garage and do it.

How about paper patching a 45 cal 200gr. SWC and sizing it to .458 ? I did some Lee TL but haven't loaded them yet.

Kind of thought about something like that but haven't forayed into paper patching yet. Guess it might be a way to get my feet wet in that art.

I have powder coated 200 gr SWC's and
have also paperpatched them.

Work fine out to 50-60 yards. Great fun
and devastating on close-in groundhogs.

Does anyone use these in a Marlin? Just wondering how they worked out in the lever gun.

I use them in a marlin.
Mine however will feed empty cases your mileage may vary.

Start by reading Army of Marksman by Douglas McChristian it will tell you all about gallery loads in the beginning, then substitute trail boss for black if you don't want smoke.

trailboss is a powder I use often but it's not magic.unique,red dot and bullseye all work well

Are you setting the RB down the case to be on top of the powder or just into the mouth and applying a crimp. I tried the 3 ball gallery from the Spencer Wolf book, meh, would be good for crowd control. Just made some 2 ball loads which seem to do better, both hit the target not quite on top of each other. I've also made some single ball for my Uberti Regulator. Just can't beat the BOOM and CLOUD.

Have to disagree with you on that one. Almost every ringed chamber I have heard of was with red dot which I consider to be a fast powder. I have no pressure trace data to back that up, but if I was wanting to write a recipe for bulging or ringing a chamber it would be to load with red dot @ 100 percent vol/compression. Which a filler achieves, though inconsistently.
