A good day - pictures added of check maker

I made a "home made" gas check maker using the one step check design located within this forum. My eventual goal is to make one for my 30 cal rifles (30.06 and 7.62 X 39) but the one I initially made was for my 38/357 to simply see if I could actually make it. Well, it worked so I loaded up 2 boxes of 38 to shoot through my 357 magnum, grabbed my teenage son and out to the farm we went. Long story short my test boxes shot well even though I may back the powder off from 3.5 to 3.4 but we will see. The gas checks were seated using a homemade die for my Star Sizer and the barrel showed no sign of leading. The only problem was, I got to test fire the first 6 rounds and then my son took over for the duration. The great thing is he was disappointed we only took 100 rounds with us and more importantly, is eager to get to the reloading room with me.

For those thinking about tinkering in their workshop and making a gas check maker or even using one made by those members on the forum, go for it as they are very useful to have. I don't need one for my revolver but is what simply a challenge for me and now it is off to make on for my 30 caliber rifles. A couple of members on this forum were very helpful and answered some questions along the way and I thank you.

Anyway, I am a long long long time member on the forum but don't share too often but thought this was worthwhile.

    Cheers

There are a couple of pictures of the maker I fabricated from what I learned on this site. One pull of the press cuts the disk and forms the check. It couldn't be easier. I disassembled the base for you to see. It was the most difficult part of the build for me to visualize. I plan to build a version of this in 30 caliber as this one is in 35 caliber.

Nice. You guys with the tools and skill to do metal work make me jealous

Do you have the means to heat temper the metal?

I do not have the means to temper the metal as that would be a nice upgrade. My "skills" are simply self taught through trial and error. A lot of error but it is a lot of fun to make something which is very functional. I purchased a used 1950-60 vintage Atlas lathe about 4 years ago and learned a lot. Thanks
