I pulled this off of the CMP forum, assuming it is accurate, a 12" gong would give you a similar sized aiming point to several of the various match targets. Of course you could go larger and paint a white border around a center of you wanted.

    4.3 200 Yard Targets
    (a) No. SR Military "Target, Rifle, Competition, Short Range."
    Aiming Black-(inches)--Rings in White-(inches)
    X ring--------3.00__________ 8 ring--------19.00
    10 ring-------7.00 __________ 7 ring--------25.00
    9 ring-------13.00 __________ 6 ring--------31.00
    _______________________ 5 ring--------37.00

    (b) NRA No. SR-42-Reduction of the SR-3 target to simulate the 300-
yard stage of the National Match Course at 200 yards.
    Aiming Black-(inches)--Rings in White-(inches)
    X ring---------1.90 _________ 7 ring--------16.56
    10 ring--------4.56 _________ 6 ring--------20.56
    9 ring---------8.56 _________ 5 ring--------24.56
    8 ring---------12.56

    (c) NRA No. MR-52-Reduction of the MR-1 target to simulate the
600-yard stage of the National Match Course at 200 yards.
    Aiming Black-(inches)--Rings in White-(inches)
    X ring---------1.79 ________ 6 ring---------15.79
    10 ring--------3.79 ________ 5 ring---------19.79
    9 ring---------5.79
    8 ring---------7.79
    7 ring--------11.79

A lot depends on your eyes too . A 6"black bull at 100 used to be perfect for me for target work with military type sights , not any more though I need almost that at 50 yds these days . So whatever size target you shoot at well at 100 simply double that for 200
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

Club just replaced the gongs on the high-power line: 10" @200 and 12" @ 300. Previously, they were 12" and 16", respectively, but the AR guys complained that they didn't move enough when hit with their milspec FMJs and 99% of our shooters are using some sort of optics, anyway. For myself, I've always used paper targets (10" paper plates painted black with a 3" white stick-on center) on a 16"-18"" cardboard square for serious practice with my iron-sighted guns so 12" should work for your purposes.

Most of my mil surps sport receiver sights....With my old eyes I use 3" bull at 50 yds, a 6" bull at 100 Yds and a 12" at 200yds

A very informative thread. The farthest that I can get on my little backyard range is about 65 yds. I want to downsize my present gong to something that is a competitive size for the Down East Garand Shooters Club’s 100 yd abbreviated match. Sounds like a 4 inch would be a good compromise. I shot one of their monthly’s last year with my Garand and enjoyed it but would love to try it with my Krag and ‘03 this year. Lot of walking though.

I made up a 14" swinging 200 yd. gong from 1/2" seralloy, tough wear resistent steel. My eyes are going is the reason for the size of my target. The steel plate I use will stand up to using FMJ Ball rounds, almost like an armour plate.Robert

12" bull at 200 yards is very good.
