I recently re-chambered a 300BLK to a .30 Herrett Rimless (trimmed down and necked up 6.8SPC case) and I think that I've found the 30 caliber AR15 chambering for me. the 1-8" twist handles bullets from 120-200gr with equal accuracy and the brass is an easy reform. It also provide for a velocity level a bit above a 7.62x39 and closely matches the 30-30 with bullets under 170grs.
That said...I also own an AR10 in 308 Win so I know that 30 Herrett Rimless will not ever match the bigger 30 caliber cartridges but its a nice one anyways.

Your thread title says alternative calibers and as you’ve deer hunt with a .45 I’ll throw the .45acp into your discussion. I’ve never been an ar kind of guy preferring walnut and steel [1903, garand, mini30] over plastic and aluminum but I do like the .45 acp in my ar builds. Accurate, same ammo as my pistols and revolvers, hard hitting and a great range and ipsc toy.

I have a .458, lots of choices being the same bullets as 45 70, but the Grendel has me wondering?
