Propellant Profiles

I've always enjoyed the Propellant Profiles section in Handloader. I finally decided to buy the book. Found one on one of the resellers websites and ordered it. I guess it goes back to the very early days of Handloader and covers just about every powder I've ever heard of except those discontinued many years ago. Not all of the newer powders are covered which is OK with me since my supply doesn't include new powders.

To me it looks to be a good addition to a load manual. I have always wondered about the various powders that are included in a list of loads for a given bullet(boolit). The profile gives a little more insight into advantages/disadvantages of various powders.

I'm sure most experienced reloaders already know most of what is covered but since I started somewhat late and have read enough online to develop a healthy suspicion of what I read on line, additional published information is welcome.

Going through the book reminded me that there are several burn rate charts on the internet. The easiest one to "use" for me is the one printed in Handloader #317 (Dec). I only use loads from manuals or individuals that post beginning to mid-range loads only after checking one of my manuals.

The interesting thing about burn rate charts is how they vary. I'm sure that the methods to arrive at relative burn rates vary as much as the results themselves.

The point of all this is; has anyone ever seen a statement that says one chart is more accurate than another?

Burn rate can vary by lot...or when a company switches suppliers. So, I don't get too worked up over burn rate charts. It has been said that you should work up new loads when you switch lots. I have heard that some powders are more consistent among lots than others, but have never had the chance to test those claims.
