    coating questions

cleaned some brass tonight, and accidentally soaked a dummy round made from a powder coated bullet, green color.

Use almost boiling water to get the citric acid to dissolve, brass came out great, but the stink was the most god awful burnt plastic shopping bag ive had.

Is that NORMAL for when powder coating gets hot?

Boiling water and citric acid shouldn't have any effect on PC. You shouldn't need boiling water to dissolve citric acid. What was on your pot or burner?

I personally clean my brass in a wet tumbler using SS pins. In a gallon of hot tap water I put a tablespoon of lemi-shine or citric acid and an ounce of ArmorAll Car Wash liquid. Then tumble until cases look like new.

PC will not dissolve/melt in hot water again once it is set. Acetone and other strong hydrocarbon solvents can/will dissolve it in a solution, but not hot water and citric acid. Remember citric acid is just tart orange juice! Used mainly for canning fruits. Not aggressive or harmful.

I agree you should NOT need boiling water for your citric cleaning solutions. I use hot tap water as it come out of the tap in the kitchen sink. Works GREAT for me.

I used citric acid and microwaved water to nearly boiling. It actually got the outsides of the cases clean. and it makes the soap dissolve better anyway. AND makes it rinse better.

Its just that when the powder coated bullet was sitting in that water long enough, it just started reeking like a burnt plastic shopping bag from walmart. I was swishing everything in a plastic bucket that I have used for over a year with this procedure and NEVER had any weird smells come from it. And I don't believe it would be a reaction to PPU powder residue. Or to nickel cases in it
