    Lyman 358429 load data

I'm finding pretty confusing data out there for the 358429 in 357 mag revolver.

I see that Taffin did tests with a Blackhawk in 2003 and it was printed. This data seems sensible to me, but it doesn't say what primer was used. I'm in the habit of using small pistol magnum.

Does anyone have a Lyman load manual listing for this bullet using Alliant 2400?

I am crimping at the crimp groove.

Lyman 4th Ed. CB HB pg. 259:

Lyman 358429 with OAL 1.553" (which means crimped over the front band if I'm not mistaken)
    Alliant 2400: Start 9.7 gr, 879 fps, 15,900 CUP // Max 13.5 gr., 1242 fps, 41,100 CUP

Wow...thanks. I was going to go with 13.5 as a max just instinct, but that makes me feel a lot better.

Did Lyman happen to use a magnum primer?

The OAL when crimped in the groove is 1.635

This happens to fit revolvers with a .375 long throat perfectly. Taffin was making use of that long Ruger throat putting 14.5 grains in methinks. 2400 is not all that compressable.

It seems to me that the Lyman starting load would work for 38 special, too.

No need for mag primer and the Lyman 4th Ed. HB does not list a load with Alliant 2400 for 38 Special using the 358429. May I recommend the Lyman manual as a good investment.

Yes, both the 3rd and 4th Ed. Refrenced a CCI 550 SPM Primer though they are not normally used with 2400. If you have delaided ignition, erratic velocities or primer cratering way below book max then I would move to the 550.

I get around 50 fps faster with a CCI 550 vs 500 using the same charge and bullet, even with Alliant 2400. With Win 296 and Lil'Gun even greater differences.

My father in law has the 47th Lyman handbook...apparently has the same data!

You use a magnum primer depending upon the powder used, not what the case headstamp says. 2400 powder does not need a magnum primer.

Who said you use a magnum primer based on the case head stamp?

The fact is that I've used CCI 550 primers and CCI500 and Winchester SPM primers in 357 magnum with all variety of powders (including 2400) and I have observed different performance with the magnum primers: about 25-50 FPS greater velocities and cleaner combustion. I suspect this is because it is getting a higher peak pressure quicker.

Many load manuals use magnum primers for 357 with the slower class powders (Lyman, Hornady, Vitavouri that I am aware of). Heck, Hodgdon uses magnum primers with Tightgroup (which IS definitely silly).

Alliant are pretty much the only ones that give data for the use CCI 500 primers with 2400. It seems the majority of loads use magnum.

Ive used SPP and SMPP successfully with 2400. A small bump in FPS with the SMPP but definitely not a requirement for 2400 from my understanding.
