Does this powder want a magnum primer? I shot some loads yesterday that were almost sooty. Temperature was about 35 degrees, I shot the same load in the summer and they shot fine. Any ideas?

No experience here but if memory serves turbo1889 posted posted info on using steel and slugs. Do a search of turbo1889 posts.
IIRC Blood Trail has also mentioned use of Steel powder for slugs so a search of his posts might turn up something too.
That's all I've got.

Most of the loads using steel powder, that I've seen use fed 209A. That just could be the manual i use pushing its components thought.

Steel is a great powder for slugs and buckshot. Pressure tested slugs @ 477 gr yielded 1700 fps with less than 10,000 psi. Slow burning so a longer barrel produces less muzzle blast. Yes, Fed 209a is recommended.

I've used Steel for slug loads and as others, used Federal primers. I believe it to be one of the slowest of shotgun powders before going to the faster end of rifle powders so some amount of "soot" can be expected especially in the shorter barrels. Some very good loads may be a little dirty. Gp
Thanks for the answers I'll try the Federals, I think I used the Fiochi's last go round.
I prefer magnum primers but have done well with cheddites (haven’t ran them in cold weather though).

I use a lot of steel powder for steel shot loads and no magnum primer is needed. It ignites easily in all temps from my experience.
