358429 load for 160 grain Linotype

hello guys i need help with a load for a smith & wesson model 28. as you know you can't crimp a 358429 bullet in the crimp groove. n frame cylinders are to short. what is a max load when crimping on the forward band? bullets are 100% Linotype. powder is winchester 296. winchester primers. thanks, john

The Lyman 49th Edition reloading book and most of the other reloading manuals realize that, and the 1.553" OAL they specify for this bullet is with the case crimped into the forward band, not the crimp groove. Hope that helps.

To expand on what our Soviet Friend said, all of the loads listed in for the 358-429 in any of their manuals since 1980 have only given load data for the "Short" OAL. So data from the 46th, 47th, 48th, 49th and 50th Lyman manuals, as well as the 3rd and 4th editions of the Cast Bullet manual all reflect the needs of the N-frame Smith Shooters.

I trimmed some .357 Mag cases just enough so I can use that the 358429 crimped (0.1250") , as I have a Model 27. The standard case length for the .357 Magnum is 1.290". Use a few tenths less powder and you are in business. I call the cases .357 Magnum Shorts.

My .357Mag shooting has all been w/ "N" frames....4, 5; and 6".

In all these revolvers and a Marlin M1894C my go-to load has been / is 14.5gr WW296 and SP Magnum primer under a
Lyman SWC of 158-172gr .

just seat the bullet deep enough to crimp on the front band of the bullet. been doing it for years never a problem. that load has dropped more then one deer around here.

The Lyman 49th Edition lists 15.0 grains of H110 (same as 296) as the max load for the 358429 and shows an LOA of 1.553.
