Dry feet. Antiperspirant on your feet does help, managing any sweat or condensation is mandatory.
More than one layer of socks. Inner most is a wicking sock, one of the ultralight summer hiking socks is my usual choice. Outer layer(s) should be something that doesn't lose insulating value if damp, wool for old school, poly fleece & etc. for new tech. And NO COTTON ANNYWHERE.
Ability to move your toes, nothing in socks or boots should be so tight as to constrict blood flow. Look at Steeger Mucklucks, they work, IF you keep moving.
I don't use battery socks. I DO use the chemical heater packs over my toes in between inner and second layer of socks.
Ignore any instructions to put 'em under your feet, they won't work after getting squished flat.
Really bad weather and stationary, use insulated boot covers.
I got by all last year and through this hunting season in MN wearing a pair of Keen winter boots, fox river summer wicking socks under "Icelandic" wool blend boot socks. And went through several dozen heater packs during hunting season & prolonged outdoor work, such as 12 hours outside, NY Eve fireworks show on top of a ski hill at -10 F. (Got my ears frostbiten though).
