I use Baffalo Bore which is a nock off equavalent to 5744 at half the price. Does well in my 30-30 with a 180g bullet.

150 gr cast or plated with 5744 works well in my 30-30 out to 150 meters. but i am moving on to shooter worlds buffalo rifle powder. better prices and works the same. got to the shooters world site to see all the info.

Bufflo Bore is Shooters world powder. Their powders are rebranded Lovex Powders. Buffalo Bore is Lovex D060-1.

I find it for 22 to 24 bucks a pound locally at the gun showes.

If you haven't yet, pick the Lyman cast manuals, the last couple of editions. There are much better powders for 30 caliber cast loads.

Considerably less expensive powders are out there than 5744 that will shoot as well or better. Save the 5744 for those BIG bore/odd ball cases where 5744 shines.

I save 5744 for use in the Nitro Express cartridges where there is almost no load data and Accurate has conveniently provided a formula to use it in any cartridge without data.

I've been using it in a couple of .30-06 rifles in matches, 18.7grs with a 175gr. bullet, mild and accurate, but many other powders are much cheaper and will shoot just as well. I have the Buffalo Bore powder, but have not yet done a side by side comparison.

I have used a lot of 5744 in 30-30. It is a great powder for that. Check your load manuals, but my go to load on the Lyman 173 fn is 19/19.5 in four different guns. I have had some success with 15.0/15.5 for light loads. Also I do use a Dacron filler as per Larry Gibson's instructions.
I may have to try the Shooters World powder, 5744 around here is $35/lb and up.

I've used 5744 with good cast bullet accuracy results in the .30-30, .30-40, .308, and .30-06. No filler.

Never used any 5744 because Unique, Red Dot, 3031 and 4895 told me not to.

I have been loading the Lee C309-170F in my 300 Win Mag with 26gr of 5744. It's a soft shooting and scary accurate load. It works really, really well in that caliber. 5744 is one of my favorite CB powders, next to the discontinued SR4759.

A5744 is my single go to cast powder for all my milsups . Cost is high , but it really is easy to use . Minimal looking around for loads that group.

Works great in all my milsurps but, leaves alot of residue in the barrel. But then it performs well or excellent with cartridges in the 30 cal group. On second thought it works with everything from 223 to 45/70. Am working on a load for 223 with NOE 225-55 MX that is hovering around 2" at 100 yds. Only at around 1800 fps and alot of unburned kernels in barrel. Hoping a little more pressure will alleviate the unburned powder. As to your 30 caliber, 5744 is very flexible. Don't be scared to go .2 or .3 grns in your ladder testing to find the load that your gun likes. But go slow when you get to max loads.

Can't wait to try the Buffalo Bore powder for replacement for 5744. 5744 is priced out of reach for me now in my fixed income situation.

My wife killed a deer this year using her Marlin .30-30 loaded with powder coated Lyman 31141 over 20.5 grains of AA5744.

Girls know what works. My wife thinks deer rifle development ended with the 250 Savage cartridge and the way she shoots it it's kind of hard to argue with her. Give your wife a hug from us!

I hope you have better luck at getting rid of un-burned 5744 kernels, in a dozen different cartridges I have always had kernels left in the bore. Just got in the habit of barrel pointing down and blowing in the barrel after each shot to clear the chamber. I got tired of dented cases.
