How do you guys carry spare rounds for hunting/shooting

I’m fairly new here and want to ask a question. Hopefully this is a good section and it hasn’t been discussed in depth else where.

How do you guys carry your spare rounds when your hunting or shooting in the woods? Do you guys just dump a bunch in your pockets, do you use a cartridge slide on your belt, a shell holder on the butt stock? I ask because the only acceptable way I have found is on the gun. I don’t like the pockets, and I usually use the waist belt on my pack so the cartridge slide wouldn’t work. Looking for other options if you guys have any. Thanks in advance for the replies!!

I have been known to stand 5-6 rounds up in the watch pocket in my jeans. There are ammo carriers that hold 5 or 10 rounds enclosed that fit in a pocket. Another Ive seen done is buy 2 elastic wrist wraps ( Sweat Bands). sew them together front and back edges leaving loops for 2-3 cartridges I have one made up and with a falling block when you open the action your hand is close to them and them are held oriented and secure. Mine has the front sewed around the entire edge. this makes a closed loop. 3 rounds slide in from the back with rims exposed.

Found a few rounds in the woods lying under the fence and figured they fell from someone's pocket as they crossed the fence. Seven in the 30-30 and box of 20 in my pack.

That’s a pretty slick idea! I like that they are close and tour mot searching around for stuff. Thanks Country!

Old bear, that’s currently what I do. Have the box mag loaded. And another 20 in the pack. It’s more often then not that I drop my pack to put a stalk on and sometime ( sorry to say) but 3 wasn’t enough.

I often use the breast pocket of my Filson Cruiser vest.

It is like this one, but without insulation and without being the dreaded "Tin Cloth". I don't know if they still make it. it will hold 8 .45-100 cartridges if necessary.

I use one of those elastic sleeves that slips over the stock, and typically have ten elastic "tubes" that the rounds slip into. Will put six or seven rounds in it. With a magazine fed rifle, I will load three or four rounds and the rest are backup. Will usually carry another ten in one of those plastic sleeves that come with Federal factory rounds in my fanny pack. The sleeves also work well with single shots for quick acquisition. When the rifle comes out of the case, the rounds are close at hand.

The only problem with the elastic stock sleeves is that they tend to slide down the stocks taper, towards the pistol grip. Solved that problem by melting a hole about a half inch from the rear bottom edge of the sleeve, that slips over the sling swivel stud, and problem solved. I used a large nail, heated with a propane torch to melt the hole.

I like the watch pocket idea, but here in the frozen tundra, the pants with the watch pocket is usually under the insulated bibs!

If you wear a toboggan in cold weather, stick a few in the fold.

Magazine full and five or so in the cartridge loops of my gun belt. If no gun belt, then my pocket. If I am hunting men, that is another story.

Cartridge belt for the single shots, belt pouch for the repeaters.
Long range rules, the rest drool.

I use an old rubberized belt slide that holds 5 rounds of .06 or .30-30. Fits in pocket or on my belt. Use the 12 round leather cartridge slide for Revolver ammo. Fits in the front pocket of my britches.
But I prefer to carry ammo on my belt, and a daypack on my back.

Of course if you're hunting Jackrabbits you're gonna NEED A LOT MORE ammo then 10-20 rounds.
Then ya gotta .50cal ammo can strapped to your back.

But I haven't been able to Hunt for 20yrs. So it's moot point for me.
    I HATE auto-correct

Happiness is a Warm GUN & more ammo to shoot in it.

My Experience and My Opinion, are just that, Mine.

Thanks guys. I had to look up what a toboggan was I hope I didn’t date myself but that’s a good idea, that would have never crossed my mind.

Between the hinged floor plate and the feed rails.

If it's for a Pistol you could carry a couple spare magazines (for something that will hold that round; Doesn't have to be the same gun)
    Same for Rimfire
Rifles, I've used those MTM "Ammo wallets by Case-Gard", they can work pretty well.
And I've made my own wood blocks to carry ammo.
Speed Strips could work well if your gun matches the base diameter that one of those uses.
Could make your own carrier if you can sew (I am thinking a zippered case with elastic loops.)

Usually like this. But, it does depend on what the caliber is.

If 4-5 additional rounds are desired they can go in a zippered or buttoned pocket; there's no need for speed to get to those rounds. Take one of the 10 round plastic dividers that comes in Federal ammunition boxes and cut it in half. Put the spares in that so they don't rattle and stuff the whole thing in a pocket.

If using a single shot rifle, then something like the cartridge slide in post #15 would be useful.

Pocket in warm weather or for 22's I got one of those Tandy "thumb purses". Can't believe how handy that thing is. Cool/cold weather the cartridge loops in the pockets of my hunting coat has worked admirably for over 50 years. Make that first shot count and you don't have to worry about where or what your extra ammo is in.

My Win 94 .30-30 has a sling with pockets for 6, plus one of those elastic slide on carriers.

Most of my single shots have either the elastic carrier or a strap on carrier. Adds virtually no weight and a lot of functionality.

And as noted above, a hole for the sling stud keeps them in place.

I use a repro McKeever USMC (!) pouch. In the smaller surplus pouch is an Altiods tin containing a 'pull through' and patches.\
