    Disappointment....

Prior to my late wife passing I seldom if ever came up to the Phenix City ,Alabama or Columbus, Georgia area. I just didn't like the place back then.
Well, I met and married Lori and moved up here. She's lived in the area all of her life, and knows the area like the back of her hand.

We were going somewhere, with her driving and me looking around at everything like someone's puppy when I saw a building with a big sign on it that said "Cartridge World."

I got kinda excited and asked if we could stop in there to see what they had. Lori just looked at me and laughed. The place sold ink cartridges for printers.....

I managed the insulation plant in Phenix long ago but lived in Columbus. Hated the summers. Some darn good BBQ in Phenix.

One opened near here a few years ago, right next to the Ace Hardware. I got all worked up too, only to be unceremoniously let down.

Reminds me of Prom night, 1977......

Don't feel bad . . . every time the printer runs out of ink, I ask my wife if she can pick up a new "ribbon" for it . . . and then she reminds me that it's not a typewriter . . . geeesh . . . talk about feeling old!

I make it out to that area a couple of times a year for work. Beautiful part of the country.

There's a store I drive by occasionally in the outlet mall called leoupold or some spelling of that, silly me thinking optics. So one day the wife and I are driving around with time to spare so as we drive by I suggest that we stop in and have a look. The wife gets kind of excited and says yes. It turned out to be a higher end jewelry store. Well let me tell you she wasn't happy to leave empty handed. She still ribs me about whenever we head down to kittery

You have heard the old saying: Truth is stranger that fiction? You should read the history of Phenix City, Alabama. Just like a Chicago gangster movie, except it really happened.

    Have a blessed day,

    Leon

As a tanker, I have a deep and abiding distaste for the area.

I saw the movie and read some books, and a retired city councilman who ran the CVS store had a room full of pictures, as well as in the spring he did have a short walking tour of the area. He also has published a book full of those pictures that I believe can be purchased at the Government center. I live one mile from 14th street, and all of the older buildings up to the courthouse have been demolished and removed.

I personally believe that there is still an undercurrent in the city, not nearly as blatant as before but still here...
