    45 GAP Problem / Opinions?

Loading 200 grain cast PC coated boolits in 45 GAP using Longshot. 6.0 per Hodgen's load data. primers are WSP. loaded up around 100 rounds or so. checked powder levels, all dumps where right at 6.0.

These rounds are throwing un-burnt powder out of the muzzle like a party popper. first round i thought i might have had a squib but there was a hole in the target, torn the slide off and checked, thought it was just a fluke, tried another few rounds with the same results. I had to hand cycle the slide. I had a only one or two actually fully burn and cycle the action. the powder is fine, used in 460 Rowland with no issues. Used the same primers with titegroup and no issues with that powder and everything cycled, gun ran fine.

I will try Long shot with some other types of primers to see if that helps. Maybe get another pound to see if it is in fact the powder, but the same powder works in other calibers.

    Other thoughts?

Your load likely isn't developing enough pressure to effectively burn the powder. Longshot appears to be the slowest Hodgdon powder listed for 45 GAP. The starting load for Longshot is 6.0, but this is with a Speer jacketed bullet which will have higher engraving pressure than your PC coated cast.

    Yup, bullseye. 3.5 gets me 700fps out of a G37 coal 1.035 using a n.o.e 200r fn Pretty accurate

W231/HP 38 is the answer for that and all the other auto pistol rounds. 9MM .40 S&W, .45 ACP .44 Special, Mid Range .44 Mag, .45 LC.

The reason why you are not getting a complete burn is because the load you are using is not developing enough pressure to make the powder burn right. I believe this was mentioned before,,, but bares repeating.

I love the 45 GAP such a underappreciated round for sure. I use Unique and Titegroup with no Problems.

Not to beat a dead horse but... I agree with the others that you need to use a faster burning powder for the 45GAP than Longshot. IIRC, Longshot's burn rate is close to 2400 and 45GAP just doesn't hold enough to make it work right. A mag primer might help but a faster burning powder is a better answer as several others have already mentioned.

Good luck on finding an ideal combo!
