    bought a new rifle

Man choosing a rifle caliber is difficult
I bought a new Winchester Model 70 Super Grade and was having a heck of a time deciding what cal to get it in
I was going back and forth between the 308 win and the 30-06 sprfld
never owning a rifle in either cal
well I made the call today and got a 30-06 on the way for versatility of the cartridge being the deciding factor

This was a suspenseful post but I’m glad it had a happy ending. Good choice on the ‘06.

Both cartridges are versatile and good choices. The 30-06 has the edge though. I own rifles in both calibers and shoot the 30-06 more often.
Nothing on the North American continent that can't be killed with the 30-06 and appropriate loads.

At worst, there is no more than a 75 yard difference in them. In most cases there is no more than a 25 yard difference.

It is nice when our decision is between two things that are both good choices. In this case both would have been good but you chose the one that is best for you. I believe I would have made the same choice you made. I believe the pick of "which rifle" was a harder decision. But again, I think you chose wisely. I am sure it will work out to be a great rifle/caliber combination. I look forward to seeing pictures and hearing stories of future 'success' with it.

Beautiful rifles, nice wood, already has a Pachmayr Decelerator, improved bedding and claw extractor, what's not to love?
I give loading advice based on my actual results in factory rifles with standard chambers, twist rates and basic accurizing.
My goals for using cast boolits are lots of good, cheap, and reasonably accurate shooting, while avoiding overly tedious loading processes.

I love my M70 in .308. Had one in .30/06 but sold it. My .308 was a better gun but both were good. I will likely never sell it.

Regrettably, my new Compass in .308 seems as good or better accuracy wise and is 25% of the cost. Makes it difficult to spend what a M70 costs to get a prettier gun without the cheap plastic magazine. I thought about getting a nicer stock for the Compass but it already shoots great.

The M70 is a class act. But I can drag the Compass around and not fret about it.

You never go wrong with the 06. Nice selection.

Especially with a cast boolit with that nice long neck.

Got away from the 308 20 years ago and haven't come back. There has been a 30-06 at my house since before I was born. The 30-06 doesn't really beat out the 308 by much until bullet weights exceed 165 grains--then the larger boiler room and the slower powders & volumes they can accomodate come into play. That longer neck IS a good thing for the castings, as well.
I don't paint bullets. I like Black Rifle Coffee. Sacred cows are always fair game. California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.

I use 308 for semi-autos mostly, with Jacketed bullets, 30-06 for bolt guns, with Cast or Jacketed. Garand is an exception. 308 cases are a bit cheaper so it's workable for me. Either of the two is a decent choice; I use 180 grain projectiles mostly, just what I grew up with and am used to. 308's a bit less powerful but that doesn't mean I'd suggest that anyone I care for, stand in front of one! Either will do the job.

    Congrats on your choice!

I must say though ..... between those two cartridges, there is no wrong choice!

I've never had a desire to own an '06 but the truth of this statement cannot be denied.

I always tell people asking what to get - .30-06
Unless your after something that wants to eat you then I'd want something much bigger.
I did the wiz bang and short light stuff years ago and came back to the 06.

I guess I have it backwards. Semi-auto .30-06 and bolt .308 (Garand and Savage 12). Agree with all above. I am tempted to get a .308 barrel for the Garand.
