Powder coating in lieu of gas checks

Has anyone been using cast boolits designed for gas checks, without the gas checks and just powder coating them? what have your results been?

Some have different results and claim normal velocities. Works fine for me for low velocity plinking with pistol powders.

For me, powder coating was like a great lube. It doesn't do anything magical to a boolit gc base or pb. Boolit hardness and fit are king. If you want speed, gas check.

Not looking for speed. 1000-1100 FPS range. Just wondering if accuracy is negatively affected due to losing the gas check as the last bearing surface. I think the bullet would be well enough supported with the 3 driving band of the Mold I am thinking about getting for my 480 Ruger revolver. Lee's .476-325 gr gas check mold.

Under 1200, may be okay. Try it see. You wont lead thats for sure. Load up about 10 rounds and give a test shot. Do a side by side comparison 10 with gc and 10 with out.

Powder coating does everything a gas check does and more so a GC is not needed, but if your bullet has a GC base accuracy will suffer because a properly installed GC will yield a flat and perpendicular base. A bullet is steered from the base. Speed is not an issue with PC I have fired powder coated bullets at 3500+ fps with alloy that if it were just lubed would have leaded the barrel. I personally use gas checks on bullets designed for a gas check, even though they are powder coated.

I shoot 300 to 500grs in my .45-70 power coated. Some of the boolits are made for GCs, but I never use them. If you have an aluminum mold, it’s not hard to drill our the part that makes the groove in the boolit. I’m planning to do that to one of mine.

Also, I find the bigger the boolit the easier it is to get good results. Not that you can’t PC .223s. A lot of people do. I just find it easier with the big slow moving slugs that are very forgiving. Maybe that’s why they work so well with or without GCs.

The accuracy break for PC'd boolits with /without gas checks is between 1600 and 2100 FPS depending on the boolit and alloy. YMMV

I have had lots of loads with good accuracy and leading free performance without checks using PC coated boolits.

Heavy loads include: 327 full power, 357 Mag full power, 357 Max full power (up to 1800 fps), 44 mag full power.

For 30-30 and 30 Herrett, I get no leading with PC, but accuracy gets bad somewhere above around 1600 fps.

The above includes "gas check" molds for the 357 Max (200 gr Lee) and the 30 cal (Lee 150 and 170).
