powder coated gould boolit gets a buck

I have been experimenting with powder coating bullets and decided to try a few gould bullets i had kicking around for the 45-70, found they shot great with 50grs of 3031 in my old Marlin. Headed out for a walk and found a fresh scrape and some decent tracks so started after him, finally got up with him around noontime and got a brief opportunity for a shot so took it. Deer took off and I saw steam going out the side so knew it was a good shot. Click image for larger version.

Way bigger than any I've ever killed, congratulations!

Didn't you kill a big one last year with a .348 as well?

I did get a nice one last year with the .348, the rack from that one fits inside this one with room to spare! Body was a bit bigger on last years though, both nice deer and two of my best. I have owned this 45-70 for years but never really hunted with it much, always seem to end up with the model 71 if a lever gun is called for. I had recently re-read "Forty Years with the 45-70" by Paul Matthews and it got me thinking about using it this year. That and I really wanted to use one of the powder coated gould bolts.

I followed him around for almost two hours before i finally got a chance to shoot, wasn't able to stay on the tracks as well as i would have liked and lost him a couple times. It all worked out in the end, conditions were perfect under foot, decent snow and quiet.
