    For short rods I have collected some brass "float" rods rom old flush toilet innards. The threaded ends allow me to affix brass nut and spin-file it down to just under bore size.

    I bought several 36" lengths of brass rod in various diameters from a local metal outlet (Metals Supermarket, but that is a Canadian company). That gives me enough length to tap a test boolit through a barrel to slug it and still allow for the length of the action when swinging a small mallet.
    I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't reached my "Expiry" date!
