Need a load for a 228gr cast in an 03A3

I can't find a load in my Lyman 29th reloading book over 210gr. I need a load for my 03A3 using a Don Egan MX-3 228gr GC bullet. The bullet is 1.285 long with a nose about .855 long and .298 in diameter. The bullet is seated just past the driving bands (.440) that are .308 at an OAL of 3.385, just enough to eject a loaded round. The BHN is 15. Preferably I would like to use IMR 4895 but have on hand 3031, H4198, R7, SR4756 and more. Thanks for any help

Find the lyman 1967 reloading manual you will find starting loads for 213gr cast boolits with common powders.

In 30-06 I used to load a 245gr boolit with 35gr of H4895 which gave me right at 1,950fps and shot well.

Look up starting loads for 220 grain jacketed bullets. That should put you in the correct area to reduce the 4895 load. You did not say what velocity you wanted, but this will give you a good 1800 to 2000 foot per second load I believe.

I looked in a few books and found a starting load at 36gr of IMR4895 for a 220 jacketed bullet in Modern Reloading by Richard Lee. What you are stating is this will be a starting load for a 228 cast bullet

My first concern is to have a safe load that will stabilize the long bullet and work up from there.

I suggest you start at 32 gr of the IMR 4895, use a Dacron filler and work up in 1 gr increments until accuracy goes south (will happen before pressure becomes a problem). The bullet should be plenty stable with that start load.
