I'm glad you asked this question as I have been contemplating H4198 for my 303 Brits with paper patch. I've been using H4227 and have a spare can of it but the slower 4198 sounds like a better option.

So 4198 works in the hornet? Good to know. Mine gets Lil'Gun under jacketed's and it's no slouch (55gr @ 2740 fps!) I'm wanting to try cast in it again.

I use alot of it for reduced loads in 30-30, 06, 270, with J word boolits. Saves wear and tear on my Model 54 and 95 in 06, pleasant to shood and reasonably accurate. Also H4895 works well too

I just ran out and I will get more. IMR 4198 is very useful.

It will work in the .30 Carbine Ruger, but velocity is low and you will get unburned powder. Works OK as long as you keep muzzle elevated while poking out empties, then spin cylinder with gate open and blow out loose powder before reloading.

The 4198 is pretty good in my 38-55 too.

For m1 carbine I would certainly use h110 before all else. 4227 would be the fall back powder.

My carbine load with 110 hornady bullets is accurate but not max. No need to hot rod the old gun but h110 cannot be reduced beyond minimum. You probably knew that.

An empty .45 ACP case full of it leveled off works great in the 5.56 with a 55gr jacketed bullet. I've just started using it in the 38-55, loved it in the 45-70 and .450 Marlin. It's good in lots of cartridges.

4198(IMR) is to my mind THE propellant of choice for loading the 444Marlin,
and I have to say I actually have never loaded the 444Marlin with anything else, except for small quantity test batches

I suppose H4198 would work as well, but where I bought my propellants back when I was still loading for the 444 for my brother and uncle, the stock of Hodgdons propellants were not as well stocked by the LGSs I dealt with...BUT they always had the IMRs in stock

My brother now loads his own, and my uncle has passed... and I don't and never have owned a 444 myself, I want for a 45-70 for my rifle in that class.

I like 12 grains of 4198 behind 50 grain bullet in .223. This is only at 25 yds.
