Surprising 10 gauge Slug Accuracy

About a month ago I was shooting my 10g (smooth bore 24 1/2" H&R, no sights I just look down the barrel) and there were a couple of guys shooting a steel deer at 200yards practicing for stalking. We joked about me being able to hit it, so I took a shot, and BANG ! the steel rang loud and nearly fell over. I was surprised.



I normally only shoot it at 25 meters, so took it to the 100yard range, took a shot with my .308 to get my eye in, then a few 10g shots. The accuracy was spot on.

they average at 1240 fps

Would you mind posting a pic of your 10 ga. slug and wad separated? The slug in that first pic looks quite different than the slug in the second pic... unless I am missing something. Is your 10 ga. printed tail wad a cylinder rather than finned like your 12 ga. tail wad?

And yes, nice!

How were the 100 yard groups?

Sorry, yes confusing. I used which pics I had to hand, I made two types of 10g Slug. There isn't much in the performance of each, but the shorter ribbed one (ooo errr) is better with the wad. Both slugs are hollow based.



I don't have any to hand but this is the 3D model. they are simply round with a plug to fix them into the based of the slugs.



I tried the fin model as in the 12g and it was slightly worse than the plain round n 10 gauge.

100yard group was about 8 inches .. I was too excited at that point to take a picture

Yes the "replicator" is the way of the future. We saw it on Star Trek 40 years ago and now it's reality as is just about every other device they predicted. Can't wait for Warp Drive as then we'll be able to leave this rock.

Hah! I want a transporter so I can avoid traffic! I'd like a phaser too but I'm not sure just what I could cast for it...

BigMrTong... I tried finned slugs several years ago using a slotted core in a push out mould so fins were part of the cast slug. The slugs looked very much like the Corbin swaged slugs:

I found the fins didn't work as well as a typical cylindrical HB slug I think because the fins travel in a partial vacuum due to shock wave.

My goal was to make a ribbed slug like a straight ribbed Brenneke but I saw the potential to make the finned slug using the same core before I bored it out. It worked to make very cool looking slugs but they were not as accurate as the more standard cylindrical skirt slugs so I did bore out the core and make the ribbed slugs. In the end it seems that smooth cylindrical slugs work as well and are easier to cast.

Anyway, I like your 3D mod's and look forward to more test results. This is fun and educational! I do like those big brass hulls! Shiny!
