Gas Checks Before or After PC

I have always added Gas checks after PCing the boolits. I have wanted to try to before, but didn’t see how I could. I use my sizer to seat them and always lube bare lead boolits. If I don’t lube, don’t I risk having lead gauling in the sizer?

I once tried to PC some boolits that had been lubed, but after two rinses with acetone, I couldn’t get the PC to stick well.

Any ideas how to gas check before PCing?

Just run them through a LEE OR NOE sizer to install gas checks then PC. If you are using your lubesizer to install gas checks you will usually have some lube on the boolit. Getting all lube off of a boolit is tricky sometimes as different lubes need different solvents. Mineral spirits are my last choice, it seems to stay on boolits and PC won't stick. Naptha works better IMHO and after that use the acetone. Acetone by itself will not remove some lubes, naptha first and then the acetone to remove any residue. IMHO get a LEE flairing die and then some NOE bushings and go to town.

By the way there is a sticky on this subject. I find that most questions about PC are pretty well covered in the stickies.

I tried both ways and decided it worked best for me to PC first, so that is how I do it. But when I was trying both ways I just cleaned out my size die good (I use a Star) and didn't have any sticking problems when checking a bare boolit. Might have been different if I needed to go down more than a couple thousandths, but with the boolits I tried I didn't have any problems.

Is it naphtha that is in brake cleaner? I use brake cleaner often to clean off oil from my molds before using them.

Back off the pressure on your Lube-Sizer. Clean out the holes in the size die and the inner surface of your sizer die and your in business.

I have a simple NOE sizer. I am worried, if I size without lube to seat the GC, won’t I get lead on my die? If I lube the boolit, I can’t get it clean enough for the powder to stick.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I’ll give it a try then.

    Before PC.
I size with the checks on.
Also use a NOE sizer with no lube.
I'm new to this, but everything is going smoothly so far.

If you do have a problem in not using lube, try lubing bullets with "Ideal" yellow 77 #31-358 which is a water soluable wire pulling lube. It washes off with a garden hose followed with some hot water. I have actually used it on some very humid days to get a better PC coat. It is about like yougart but so far the stuff has worked extremely well. Its messy but if you need a lube for a push through type die, it works.
