If you’re dropping extras doesn’t the problem almost have to be related to the primer retention pin and spring?

I second this suggestion. For years I didn't know this spring existed and that there was an adjustment screw behind it. Find this and adjust it.

Only other improvement is shorter tubes. I have large and small tubes that hold about 50 primers. Plenty for my rifle batches and a lot less flopping; a pleasure to use.

Short tubes never occurred to me, duh! Great idea!

Find primer tubing here, different wall thickness for small/large primers, measure what you have and buy what you need:
