Powder coating 45/70 Trapdoor

I’m casting the Lee 405 grain hollow base for my 1873 Springfield Trapdoor. I am going to use both smokeless and Goex. Will powder coating the hollowbase bullet be ok using smokeless powder in this Trapdoor?
I would assume that when using Goex a lube must be used without the powder coating.

Hollow base, not a problem if it gets coated or not; only important that the area that contacts the rifling gets coated

Many people do not PC the bottom.

I've PC'd over 100# of 45/70 -for friends, they love them

I shoot those bullets powder coated in my Henry 45-70 and they work very well. Gp

Lube needed with black powder regardless of the coating or not.

I would suggest maybe lube cookies with a plain base. With a hollow base I would probably pan lube with SPG or similar.

I powder coated some Lee 405 HB .45-70 bullets to try in my old Trapdoor with fairly good results. I tried the same bullet and loads in a Danish Rolling Block and it shot a fantastic 3 shot group at 100 yards. I loaded and shot them "naked" (no outside lube). All of my loads were with Trapdoor safe charges of IMR4198 though and not with black powder ...

Powder coating works great in my .45-70 Marlin. I don’t see a need to gas check them.

I don’t see any reason you couldn’t use the powder coated boolits with BP if you wanted to. Just follow correct procedures for BP. Swabbing after each shot or using a greese cookie.

Thanks everyone for the information. I was able to cast a 100 of them today. Still trying to get a handle on that as some were at 405 grains and some as low as 396 grains. Anyways going to pan lube half and get the makings to powder coat the rest.

I picked up an 8 oz Eastwood Hot Coat bright red powder. Will this work ok for the 45/70 bullets?

Have some loaded up hoping to get out in next week or so. Did a second batch with not as much powder on them and they came out much better than the first.

Well the pc bullets over 27 grains of H4198 worked very well though my eyes really sucked trying to see sights. So I thought I would try them with Goex. Pan lubed some with 50/50 beeswax and olive oil. For first time pan lubing they seemed to be ok. Will load some up with around 60 grains of Goex and see how they work.
I will say those ones I shot with H4198 were super clean so I’m sure with the black powder I will have a mess to clean up.
