I've got several expanders just for .38 Special. The temper of the brass alone makes it respond differently as it's expanded, so to get just the right sizing for my full wadcutter target loads I pick one or another as needed.

As someone has already pointed out, cramming a soft cast bullet into a case that's even .001 undersize effectively sizes that bullet down from what you had when you lubed it..

I also make my own m type neck expander/flaring tools. I use 1/2" fine thread bolts turned to fit as needed inside a piece of drilled and threaded 7/8x14 all thread.
RCBS' newer die sets have an "M type" expander...at least for .38-357 Magnum. It works pretty good, but recently, I had the plug out of my Lyman .38 "M" die, and it seems to have a longer expansion diameter. So, I think I'll use the Lyman die with my RCBS dies for a while, and see how it all works out.
