    Toss it or Use it

Let me preface by saying I “Toss it” and it is against my logic to “Use it” but sometimes my logic is wrong so I am poking your minds!

Scenario: Loading up some big cartridge requiring 70grs of powder “A.” You are low and throw your last little bit and it only measures 45grs. You now open a brand new bottle of powder “A” do you:

    A. Pour the charge you just threw in the new bottle, shake it up and “Use It”
    B. Screw this little bit and “Toss It”
And yes I am bored at work and my mind is all over the place.

I'm an "A" guy. Penny saved and all that. If I were a world class BR shooter, who knows......... I'm a former upstate NY guy, too. Maybe it's regional.

Yes Use it... that 45 grains compared to 7000 is not even statistical... Just remember a new bottle from a NEW lot number of powder may perform HOTTER... so do NOT load any FULL power loads... drop 10 % and work back up... Sticky bolts, blown primers, fried retna... all these are avoidable.

I would say a version of A. Its just like with me and food, if i have a little left ill put it on the plate to use it and put the new stuff with it so as not to spoil any sooner the new stuff. So put that 45 on your scale and add 25 new grains and be happy.

I use Lee Powder Measures, and when they get below 1/2 full they start to throw inconsistent loads. So I will admit that I will throw a little more then 45 grains into the new container. Then I roll the new bottle to mix it up some.

This is great!! Henceforth, when employing that standard practice, I can think of myself as an "A" guy rather than a "CP" (Cheap Pri@#).

Gee- I've been loading for 39 years and this just never happened!! Yah, and I've got a bridge to sell too! Not regional, just practical. I'm an A guy too.

I wouldn't mix "old" A and "new A in the bottle....I would add "New" A to the powder hopper and keep going....
That said...IF I was a Bench Rest shooter, I wouldn't be so casual and I would start a new load deveolpment unless the powder was from the same lot.

Use it. Poor it into the new batch and work up a new load. If your preferred load is below the published maximum, I would just go ahead and load up the 70 grains and go for it. If it is at or near maximum, I would drop back 10% just to be safe.

What I usually do is to use the old stuff in my powder trickler (if using a trickler) or if not mix it with a new can and shake gently. If you mix a small amount with a new canister, it won't make a difference as the old powder will be deluted so much there will be no danger.
