Elko is a great town! It has all the usual stores you would expect for a booming mining town. It is close to one of the most beautiful mountain ranges on earth (the Rubies) and is just south of my favorite mountain range (the Jarbidge Mtns.) with its large populations of elk, mule deer, antelope, and more recently a small herd of moose. There is a small ski area not too far from town with an active "heli-skiing" operation. It has lots of hotels and motels because of its location between San Francisco and Salt Lake some of which have casino's that have been very good to me in recent years. There are lakes nearby with trout, bass (largemouth and smallmouth) within a few miles as well as dozens of trout streams. There are excellent outdoor sporting goods stores. There is a website you can watch called nvwx.com (I think) but I access it through a Nevada webcams site where you can watch the local weather, traffic, and the local newspapers. President Trump had a rally there about a week ago. Do you have a more specific request?

I like Elko. I used to go the the National Cowboy Poets gathering down there. Great people and music. Large Basque population in the area.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

I love the Elko area, work there a lot on BLM ground. I spend a good portion of my summers living there, and am headed back next week. Lots to see and do, an incredible amount of public land around it! You are quite a ways from much else though. Game numbers are good by Nevada standards, but a little different than what I'm used to here in Montana. There is a lot of mining there, with Barrick and Newmont making up a huge portion of the town. In that respect it reminds me of the oil patch; kind of a boom and bust cycle, with some of the usual trash that follow that kind of money. There are some aspects that follow that which would make me worry a little if I had my wife there and wanted to raise a family, but for the most part it's well policed. Lots of stores, Smith's, Walmart, Albertsons etc. Quite a few casinos, and the whole Nevada brothel thing but that is really well kept behind closed doors out of sight/out of mind kind of thing. Lots of room to shoot whenever youd like, as far as youd like though! All in all a pretty fun big small town that I enjoy.

PS the food there is amazing! Many different restaurants, try the Basque feeds if you're hungry, and make sure you grab a pasties from Bulls!

    Any questions just ask.

Thank you all for the information. The job in question involves service and support of the mining industry mostly. Id be working out of a home office, we'd be looking to live in an outlying area from elko itself. So far, we like what we see. We are heading out to southern Utah in December and will probably swing up to 80 on the way back for some boots on the ground recon.

Those folks that enjoy a more Rowdy sort of lifestyle will like Elko. The usual boom and bust of a mining town. As for the brothels, you won't even notice and less you seek them out. Very well policed. Be aware that there is a very large Res. there and large Paiute population. Ranching, mining, casino's and service type jobs run the economy. Lots of outdoor type adventures to be had. With some undesirable elements, it pays to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out. Gp

You wont even know they're there, they try pretty hard to maintain a low profile, knowing that any bad PR could be hard on business. As GP said, the mining element is where most of the trash filters in, 99% good folks working hard and taking care of their families, but as with the oil patch or anything similar, you have the folks that that kind of fast money brings in too.

BOA takes care of the industry .
There's a lot more to it than what's on the surface . I recommend a book called the Nye county Brothel wars .
Gambling addiction and alcoholism is a far greater threat . Liquor , wine , beer is 24 hour at every gas station and grocery store next to the slots .
Want a strawberry margarita with a Spanish omlete at 5:30 Sunday morning cause that's what you want ? No problem .
For now swapping guns is easy .
Typically store deals take less time to clear the background check than to do the paperwork .
    Reloading supplies in Walmart .
Moose sightings trophy elk and deer .
Duck and goose hunting is ok .
    Snow shoe rabbits .
Chucker , quail , pheasant , blue and ruffed grouse .
A little bass , mostly trout fishing .
    3-4 auto dealers .
My X1 is in Ohio now so you don't have to worry about her .

Not as many as Las Vegas (where it's illegal.)

Hello Redneckdan. I live in Spring Creek, across the hill from Elko, and the main bedroom community for Elko and the mining industry. I have a little different take on the undesirable elements here than most have mentioned, and it has little to do with mining, gambling, or the houses, mostly concerning the city types from out of state who have come in to run things like the Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

The gathering was a grand thing when it began, when we could go to Stockman's and hear the likes of Ian Tyson for free, and talk with him or the others afterward. It is big business now and the people who have come in to feed off that have given us things like the Peace Park, with its Buddhist Prayer Wheel, and the folks that go with such. The best small town in America has changed some.

I guess there are several good realtors around, though I have little knowledge of most. PM me and maybe I can name a couple I knew before they became realtors.
