    Cutting Board Finish

I have a laminated cutting board that I use cut my game.
The surface is getting rough and hard to clean.
For the sake of sanitation , I want to sand it smooth and apply some sort of sealer that is food safe.
I was thinking mineral oil would work.
Any thought or ideas on this?....dale

Consumer Reports did an article on cutting boards many years ago. One tidbit I recall is they preferred wood over plastic because the sap in wood has an antiseptic effect. Plastic, on the other hand, gets shallow cuts that collect food and grow bacteria.

Corn oil. They used to use it exclusively until the recent "IT GOES RANCID" nonsense. If you clean your cutting board regularly it wont go rancid.

I have some pure Tung oil for stock refinishing. It is food grade and recommended for cutting boards. If I had a cutting board, I'd use the Tung oil for the finish.

I use mineral oil. Slather it on...let it sit at a minimum of 2 hours...if it soaks in...slather on some more....after 2 hours where its still slick looking...wipe off the excess and put it to use.

I have used mineral oil, peanut oil, canola oil and a butcher block oil sold by wood crafters. I rub the block down with oils after I wash it since these oils may be removed rom the surface by soap and water

Tung oil is child safe and non toxic, we use it to finish baby furniture with .
Mineral oil of course is non toxic also but doesn't develop much of a surface film .

Wife just returned from Alaska and brought home a Ulu and wooden cutting bowl. Mineral oil is what the manufacture, recommended.
