22 calibre gas check fit problems

I recently cast a bunch of Lyman 224415 55 gr bullets for use in my single shot .223.
I am having difficulties in getting the Lyman gas checks to snap over the base. A lot of struggle and light tapping with a wood hammer get most of them on, but some are deformed.
Suggestions? Gas checks are very soft copper. A small expanding rod?

I use a lubrasizer and press them on. You have to have pliers to get them off. Try your sizing die

Use a big one inch washer over your lubersizer die to press the bullet into the gass check. I like the washer more than a Lyman gas check seating die. You can also get the NOE gas check expander.

Thanks. But I am still concerned about getting them started on the base. Currently they are too small to sit on the base to allow me to seat them squarely. When I tried my sizer it mashed the gas check.

Slow and tedious but find a regular punch or tapered punch that is a little bigger than than id of checks and tap with hammer. I have a set of cheap tapered brass punches that one of the smaller ones works for this. Of course you have to pry them off of the punch every time. Takes awhile but saves your checks.

Ive had good results annealing gas checks when bases have been too big. Easy proceedure and makes the checks alot softer.

A large ball bearing pressed on the check will flare the rim.

Thanks. I will try to make one out of a brass rod I have. Should be able to do it on my drill press.

NOE also makes a gas check seating tool, we bought one last year. Works good once I got the hang of it.

Make sure there is no flare on the base,a couple of my .22 moulds do this , poor fitting plates are the main cause.I used a pencil sharpener to remove the flare,turning the pill away from the cutting edge to debur it.It was a fiddle but did not have to remelt the pills.The checks went on easy.I will fix the sprew plates !!
