Most people ARE NOT baking PC long enough

It seems most people ARE NOT baking PC long enough!!!!
This will cause an incomplete cure which allows gunpowder to affect the PC surface of a bullet and other possible problems.

I've found 2 different bake schedules (which are actually similar with different stages where you start timing the bake cycle

EASTWOOD - Cure Time: 20 Minutes AFTER flowout/the PC melts

PBTP, CARDINAL - 10 minutes AFTER the boolits reach 400°

    https://www.powderbuythepound.com/su...wet-black.html
    • Cure Schedule = 400f/10 Min at Part Metal Temperature

    http://www.cardinalpaint.com/assets/...9-T013-TDS.pdf
Cardinal paint CURE SCHEDULE: (METAL TEMPERATURE) 10 MINUTES @ 400 DEGREES F.
I guess the time is relevant to how/when you start gauging it

    https://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-pow...ight-blue.html
    SPECIFICATIONS

    Color: Ford Light Blue
    Gloss Level: Gloss
    Cure Temperature: 400 Degrees
Cure Time: 20 Minutes after flowout

I have been going 11 to 12 minutes after the boolit is at 400 on the outside. This is 6 minutes to 400 as tested with templaq 400. I have dissembled powder coated boolits that were loaded over a year ago, and all have been fine.
I worried about this when some were posting pictures of BE sticking to the base of their
boolits and the PC getting soft. I am using the RAL colors from Smoke4320.
    Thanks for the heads up.

Oven preheated to 420 F. 16 minutes bake time for Smoke's colors and not a single coating failure in two years of coating.

Kraschenbirn, curious, how do the PC'd boolits react to contact with TG and other powders?

Dick Thompson (sixshot) has said much over 12 minutes is a waste of electricity. Most are not well equiped to argue him.
I have gone down to 15 minutes, and they withstand a sledge hammer, smashing them. Not all have been tested that way because if I tested all that way I would have none to shoot.

I follow the manufactures recommendations, not a utuber. haven't had a problem and the time above 12 minutes is not a waste if it saves me from having to delead even one gun, ymmv.

Dick thompson isnt a utuber. He is recognized by many as the go to person on a couple, sites as the man in powder coating. And has started many down the road of powder coating. He has been doing it for several years now and has taken many head of game with powder coated bullets. Of course anyone can do as they want. I know I do so others can too.

I read and learn from sixshot. He is the man. I also read and learn and buy powder from Smoke. I preheat my oven to 400 and then I bake for 15min per smoke’s instructions. I have been very happy with the performance of my powder coat. I have not had one problem.
Due to the price of primers, warning shots will no longer be given!

I preheat to 430, then bake for 18 min.
Did the hammer test, and it sticks.
I fallowed the instructions I was given.
How do I know if I'm cooking to long/ short?????

I use Cardinal and Eastwood powders. I preheat the oven to 400 degrees and stick them in. 20 min. later I take them out of the oven and I have never had a failure to cure. I have forgotten to check the time and left them in much longer with no harm done. A little more electricity used doesn't bother me in the least. Gp

There are so many variables. Do you have a conventional oven? Convection oven? Is it gas? Is it electric? What altitude do you live in? Climate? So yes, what works for one person may not work for the other. I just play it safe and do 400/20. Elvis Ammo (which I'm sure you heard of) swears by 275 degrees for 15 minutes. Claims bullets don't get stuck together as much. All one can do is test. Do smash test, run down the bore and if no leading then you're good.

Sheeezz, I learn something new every day! I use HF red and do not bake it long enough. Some folk think I am half baked so my PC boolits are right at home!

Exactly my experience with Eastwood PC. 20 min in a 400 degree preheated oven works perfect.

This is a thread where there really is no right or wrong. There are going to be those that follow the instructions to the letter and others that will go against the instructions. Both will give their results. The bottom line is some experiment some dont. I do. If someone else dont that is ggod too. I used to bake at 20 minutes and got good results and now I bake less time and still get good results.
Each will do what they are led to do by whatever leads that individual. The bottom line is the results that that led individual gets. If it is good then what they do to get their results is good too.
Bake as you want too. No one is going to change anyones mind.

Again I mean no hurt, harm, anguish or turmoil by my post I have posted on this posted subject. I am not baiting, trolling or calling out anyone. I am making a post based on my experience, knowledge and/or belief or opinion. That is all.

I follow the directions. But then shooting, casting and reloading are my hobbies and I pretty much like them equally and don't rush through one to get to the other. Do it however you like.

Never used TG but have loaded PC'd boolits with a fairly wide variety of powders including Unique, 700X, 2400, AA5, H4895, IMR4198, H414, and AA2015 without any apparent issue. Shot some '06 last week...RCBS 30-165SIL/Smoke's Carolina Blue/33.0 gr. H4895...that had been on the shelf over a year. Recovered a couple from the 100 yd berm; after cycling through my Garand and penetrating 5/8" OSB target board, PC approx. 90% intact, including bottom of GC.

I was thinking about the last night. All my handgun ammo and rimmed rifle ammo is stored nose down, powder on the bullet. Maybe it would be a good idea to start storing the boxes upside down to keep the powder away from the bullet, just in case. Maybe there's no need, but why not do it anyway?

Pull a couple and check. I understand that it is the nitroglycerine in the double base powders that causes the trouble. Most of the pistol powders are double base. None of the 5 that I pulled had any deterioration on the PC. All were loaded with herco, a double base powder.

Preheat oven to 380 bake for 20 to 25 min . That is with 40 grain 22 cal slugs. By the looks of it they are probably done way before I take them out.
