Thompson Center Hawken

Looking around a semi-local gunshop today they told me a guy I knew had been in with an early TC Hawken that he wanted to sell on consignment. I forgot to ask condition but knowing this guy it is likely unfired.
This is an early model for around the mid 1970's give or take. He was told it would maybe sell for $125.00 so he took it home.

I am not a big TC fan, but it intrigues me. What is a fair value for a 90/95% gun?

For a 1970's T/C Hawken In excellent shape 375.00 to 425.00 for a minty one would not be unreasonable.

I just bought one off of Gunbroker for $350
Which I think is a good price for an excellent 95% condition.

It really varies allot. Some areas of the country seem to be flooded with them used and go cheap and some areas don't have that many used, especially in good shape so of coarse they go higher. The time of year matters too. This time of year with hunting going on they go higher. There are also less to chose from. CVA quit marketing sidelocks and went the way of the inlines as well as other companies. Many people seem to be buying them and parting them out on ebay. They can get more money for the parts than the whole rifle. I would have jumped all over it at that price and I need another ML like I need a hole in the head.

That's kinda the gunshow asking price around here. Personally I would not pay that for one. Bought one a couple of months ago from a pawn shop (90% gun) for $120 OTD. Also one earlier this year via on-line auction (45 Cal/ 95% gun) for $165 shipped. Just gotta keep watching and asking.....Most black powder guys around here like either real old or real new (inline) stuff. TC Hawkens are neither.

Well there's what people say its worth, and what you can actually get for one. I had a pretty old TC hawken 50 cal w the factory scope set up and scope. Very nice shape. Best offer I got was $150, and there were few offers. Side locks is a niche market with alot of supply and low demand. I had a really nice 54cal Lyman took me 2 years to sell it. I got offers, but insultingly low.

So I put the scope on another gun, and irons on the TC. Worth $150 for me to keep it.

Allot of sellers don't really like to deal with used ones because they quite often sit a long time before selling.

FYI: I got a 50 cal Lyman a few weeks ago that came from the same person, new in the box or so it looks for $200. I thought I had won the lottery on that one.

Local pawnshop here has one, looks new, asking $250. Bought mine (guessing 80-85%) off another forum a couple years ago with the TC peep sight for $205 shipped.

I sold an 85% condition Renegade .54 for $200 the other day and was happy to get that.

As others have said it varies with location here in Pa a clean early TC and if it's a flintlock would be premium priced if a cap lock the price drops way down and would be a hard sell to anyone . In this area 375-425 for a flinter cap lock 200 bucks .

The reason the selling price varies by region is that, in some areas, frontstuffer hunters all want modern/scoped inlines with synthetic stocks, and side hammer guns will have a few birthdays on the used gun rack in those areas.

My state/area is like that - which is why I've bought T/C's in excellent shape for $100-$150, cash.

Shop near me for a long time would not take a side lock, period. No trades, no consignment. As most have learned they move really slow, so just took up space in the shop. His son took over and will allow consignments.

The lyman I had was really nice, just not something I had alot of use for. Got it cheap at a police auction for $90. I even knew people in a muzzle loader club. No those guys wanted high end guns. Low end people want inlines, so does not leave many buyers. Would think a gun that retails for $700 would sell for a better price. And mine was an old one with solid brass ramrod. $200 was best I could get.

It was funny I got lower offers for a complete TC hawken then just a barrel sells for on ebay. I looked a new barrel was $250, used $150. A stock was another $100. But in one piece was only worth $150, with the scope. Not like I'm out alot, only paid $75 for it.

Cripes the prices you guys are quoting almost make me cry. Very few T/C sidelocks made it to New Zealand and now they sell for around $500USD in interesting condition. I picked up a Hawken 50cal flinter about 28yrs ago for $300nz and its still my favourite ball shooter.
If only someone would export all those rubbish & worthless T/C sidelocks that no one wants out of the U.S it would certainly help tidy up a few gun cupboards and pawn shops.

Since S&W bought and gutted T/C Iv'e noticed that some folks are slowly starting to collect the older T/C's especially the seneca and cherokee models with a little bit of interest in the hawken, renegade, and big bore as well.

139. Thompson-Center Arms Model Hawken Flintlock Rifle. Serial # 25170. .50 caliber black powder flintlock rifle. 29” octagon barrel with a very good bore. The blue finish on the barrel is in good to very good condition with a few dings and some spots of fine rust. The lock is case colored and in very good condition with fine rust at the pan. The brass butt plate, patch box, trigger guard, nose cap, and ferrules should polish out nicely. The walnut stock is in fair to good condition with small dings and scratches. Original sights. Action works fine. Includes the ramrod. This lot also includes an extra flintlock barrel in .45 caliber. The barrel is from a kit and is finished in a greyish patina. It also has the original sights and the ramrod. Sold For 280.00

My local farm and home store sells the unfinished kits for $250.

If that Lyman is a Great Plains (am not real familiar with their models) then the TC at 125 is about right - might be comparable as shooters but not in the same paddock for looks.
