rl7 powder loads for a 358009 boolit in 35 whelen

I ran a couple of searches and came up short on this one lol.

I was looking for the min. and max loads with rl7 powder and the 358009 boolit in 35 whelen.
I "think" it may be in the lyman 47th manual, but not sure.
I have the 48th and 49th edition and even an older lyman, but it's not in the ones i have, except i did find info on rl7 with a 200 gr. boolit in the 49th.

Not asking for pet loads...just would like to know what the suggested min. and max. is with rl7 and the 358009 is if anyone
has a manual that shows it.

Would also be interested in anyone's results with rl7 in the whelen with cast.
I picked up a can of it to try in my .308 and decided to give it a go in the whelen too.

I just checked my Lyman 47th and there is no RL7 data listed with the 358009 or any other boolit. Over the years, I've collected quite a bit of 35 Whelen load data and the only reference to RL7 was with the Lyman 358315 38gr=2190fps. 42.5gr=2380fps. This is not my data, I copied it from somewhere and I don't vouch for it.

I no longer have a .35 Whelen, but have some data on Reloder 7 and #358009. I used 34 grs. Reloder 7 with water-dropped wheelweight bullets sized to .359", 291 grs. Muzzle velocity was 1842 fps with good accuracy from a Ruger 77, 22" barrel. Also, CCI large rifle primer and re-formed Remington .30-06 brass, overall cartridge length, 3.15". This load was plenty safe in my rifle, but drop back a few grains to begin. My notes indicate that 32 grs. (1708 fps) was not as accurate as 34 grs.

If I was going to try this load today, I would skip the water-dropping part unless there was a leading problem. I can't say for sure, but a .358" bullet may work as well or even better than a .359".

Thanks for checking the 47th lyman for me. I said i had the 48th and 49th, but it turns out i have the 46th and 49th editions.

Like you, i copied some info on the 358009(on 4227 powder). It was supposed to be from the 47th lyman edition, but i haven't verified that yet.

BTW, the lyman 49th shows a min. of 36 gr.(1767 fps) and a max of 40.5 gr.(2131 fps) for the 358315 boolit with rl7, so pretty much in line with what you had copied down, except for the max.

Thanks for your experience with rl7. I was looking at some 275 gr. jacketed data with rl7 for the .358 win. last night (closest info i could find to try and
"figure out a start load for the whelen" and the 358009).
It's good to know you've been there done that lol. I'll drop back from your 34 gr. load and work up as you suggested.

I use a pretty full case of imr4350 @ a bit over 2200 fps. for my hunting load with the 358009, but it gets a bit tireing from a bench at the range sometimes lol. It's very accurate load that you could hunt anything, anytime, anywhere with though.
I've been using 12 gr. of unique with a pb 358009 for 1275 fps. as a light load, again, a very accurate load.
Hoping to come up with something in between those speeds with the rl7.

    Thanks again for the info.

The Speer manuals list reduced loads using RL-7 and a 158 gr. pistol bullet. Not much help I know.

The Lyman, Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th Edition, lists a starting load of RX7 for the 358315 (204gr boolit) in the Whelen at 36.0 grains and a Max load at 40.5 grains if that helps in any way. Also, the Lyman 44th Reloading Handbook doesn't list any data for the Whelen - strange. And... QuickLoads doesn't list that boolit

The following from Ranchdog Outdoors load data page before it was taken down :
    35 whelen 360-310 ( NOE Thumper)
    Rl-7 27.2 grs 1538 fps 25K psi
    29.5 grs 1639 fps 30K psi
    31.6 grs 1726 fps 35K psi
I know its a different boolit but a starting point.
