Found another old Winchester today-update with range report

Well with all the issues I had with the Winchester 1892, it was nice to find a gun that should be a tried and true favorite. This one is a Model 94 carbine in .30-30, a transitional gun from 1939 which was one of those from the late 20's through the 1930's that used the new barrels with hooded front sights and were mated to older receivers (the ones that could take a tang sight) and had the earlier style buttstock.
This gun until 6 months ago was in Alaska, so it makes me wonder what kind of life it's lived so far. Tomorrow it goes to the range and hopefully soon, to chase deer here in New York.

Congrats on picking up a nice 94.
I have always been a Marlin man but picked up a 1913 model 94 for a song and after doing a bunch of work to get it where it needed to be it is now my favorite gun I own.
Post some more pics and let us know how it shoots.

I have that rifles twin! Me and the daughter did a full refinishing on wood and metal and she shoots great taken some deer and love the old Lyman tang sight ! Found it in a basement on the floor in a gun sock; someone had filled the barrel and action with grease so insides were fine; the fabric in places had “wormed” into the stock.
Enjoy your rifle; made to hunt deer, the ideal brush country rifle in my humble opinion!

I took the 94 out to the range today with some of my handloads, a mild load using Hornady 170 grain soft points. Got a group the size of a quarter at 25 yards. This gun is begging for a tang sight. I also put a bowling pin out to 125 yards, this gun drilled it dead center on the first shot.

Whatever cannot be remedied, must be endured.

Now that is a nice shooting 94.
    And some nice reloads.
Mine shot about 1 1/2” consistently at 25 yards with factory Hornady 150 gr. It shot the same with reloads I had that were Sierra 125 hp with 29.5 gr of 3031. I have scrubbed the barrel real good since then and cleaned off what looked like lead on the edge of the crown.
I relieved a lot of pressure off the fore-end where it was touching the barrel also since I last shot it.
Hoping it does better when I take it back to the range.

I do have a tang sight on mine but it is more out of focus than the semi-buckhorn sights for my old eyes.
