I just melted some recovered lead from my local range. After cleaning the dirt and jackets etc. I fluxed and ceaned as well as I could but had a brownish 'STUFF' floating on the melt that wouldn' t go away. What could it be?

Flux it with candle you should be able to scoop it up whatever it is.

I’ve used pine saw dust for all my fluxing, the more pitch in the wood the better
Did you flux it seveal times with sawdust and then some wax and the stuff still come back like realy fast.is it just a thin film on top this would be oxidation.Or is it more like oatmeal floating? this may be some sort of contamination.some alloys oxidize faster than others
Is it possible that you had some sort of plastic contamination occur. I have had black and brown stuff like that, appear when I melted some powder coated bullets. maybe you got a few of the poly coated bullets that Federal makes in you melt? fluxing with sawdust or pine pet bedding will get rid of it. If it is plastic.
Sintered copper from frangibles?
If it is smoking like hell its going to be melted clay pigeon the bane of my existence. You are going to loose a little lead just scoop it out n chunk it. I get it in every batch I melt, good luck.
It's probably left over dirt. Whenever I use my spoon to scrape the sides of the pot, it floats up to the surface.

scoop it off and throw it away. if it wont mix when smelting its just going to give you problems when you cast.
