Groups #1 and #2 were both shot today—same load, different brass…

Group #3 was also shot today, but it is a different load…

The same load as #3 was shot yesterday and the group was in the same area as the aim-point red dot on another target…

What would cause that Group #3 to stay at ~1 inch, but be so might higher and to the left as compared to yesterday…

The rifle is an Encore with a custom 30-40 Krag barrel...

No explanation on this end…

I get "about blank" when I click on your link. I was fireforming brass in my 25 Krag AI yesterday (Encore) and had to give it up because my stock was loose. Check that first. When it was only a little loose I could hold it in two positions - thus two groups.

Yea, I am getting the about-blank message also. It worked before, but maybe time has expired with the link--if that happens...

Regardless, I have heard of this that you mention...

Are you meaning the butt stock or the forend?

I'm going to try to post the pic of the groups, but for now, it seems impossible. I have never had this problem before...

I had that problem with my new Enfield. Have to take it completely apart to tighten the stock

It was my buttstock. Take off the small cover - two #1Phillips screws and tighten the bolt - second from the left top line on my Brownnells Magna-tip super set. Don't know what that one is - a six sided insert.

On my Encore, it is a 3/16 hex. I have a Boyd stock on it and there is no cover on the access hole to the screw...

I tightened it a bit. I don't know if it was loose or not. I didn't take much force to turn it about 1/8th turn...

I also tightened the forend. I use an electric screw driver and set it at about the middle setting. When the screw gets tight, the driver starts to click and it won't get any tighter. I don't know what torque it is, but at least both forend screws are the same tightness, or very close to it...

We'll see the next time I go to my range...

There is little or no doubt, these T/C single shot Contenders and Encores can be temperamental at times. This I have discovered over the past 35 years...

This appears to have been the problem--at least for now!!!

I shot 3 different groups using 3 different recipes. All clustered in a circle that could be covered with a silver-dollar-sized object. The groups ranged in size from .7"+ to 1.2" at 100 yards. Now to adjust to the load I am going to use and see if it stays in place...

I had heard of this some time ago, but one gets so much clutter on the brain that the "obvious" gets lost. I did tighten the screw as mentioned, but I really don't know how tight to make it. I guess there might be torque specs on it, but who knows where to find those?...

I tightened mine as tight as I could - and thought about putting some locking fluid in there but haven't yet. If and when it loosens again I probably will.

Took the Encore to my range today…

Used QL to tell me the number of clicks with reference to my groups and it adjusted to have a zero at 150 yards…

I did the number of clicks—up/down…left/right—and let the first round fly. Bango, right in the center of my steel groundhog silhouette. I am never UNAMAZED at that QL program…

Used the QL printout to determine the number of clicks for dead on hold at various ranges out to 330 yards. Hit the steel every time…

Now to look for a good ‘scope that has the clicks exposed on the turrets so you don’t have to remove the cover and that will go back to zero when needed. No mrad adjustments—only 1/8th or ¼ inch clicks or maybe MOA…

I sure hate to Loctite that screw, but that may be necessary in the future…

(I wonder if the same thing happens with the handgun grips on Contenders?)
