    Alliant 2400?

I came across a good deal on reloads with 23 gr. of 2400 and hard cast 450 gr. flat point bullets. I can't find any data to help me determine the velocity and if that is a safe load using pistol powder?

First do you know who reloaded these and how much do you trust them. Second I would pull a bullet and verify the powder weight before I did anything else. Third more info is needed such as caliber, over all length etc. I only shoot reloaded ammo from a know source that I trust. Since I reload myself that does not happen often but occasionally I will try out a friends gun that he reloads for.

Sorry about that! I meant to mention the loads are for a .45/70 Marlin lever action!

45-70 in a Marlin, eh. ...If I was gonna shoot those in my gun, I'd look up some data in a few different manuals.

BUT...judging by these two threads, you are 'Probably' OK with 23gr under a hard cast 450 gr. flat point bullet.

There is some published data in this manual for a 340gr cast boolit.

PS, I took the time to post this, mostly because they list a duplex load for 405gr boolit...a small dab of pistol powder under 60+ gr (enough for compressed load) of wholly Black (FFg)

    JonB,
thank you for the links! It appears that A2400 is a popular powder even for Trapdoor rifles!

    JonB,
The reason I mentioned A2400 as a pistol powder, is when I looked up load data, all I saw was pistol data. It was't listed as a rifle powder!

The load would be a good and fairly low presure load for the 45-70. That said, never shoot somebody elses reloads..never. If you don't load em, don't shoot em.

I will never use anyone's reloads unless I personally know the person well enough to trust their ability to reload good ammo. Unknown to me and it's a no-go. That being said, I use 2400 in the 45-70 quite a bit. In fact, some of my best loads are shot with that powder. I don't condone using those shells, but the load's not "hot" at all.

It sounds like 23gr is a safe enough load, so long at there's not a couple in there with 46gr instead, by accident (or even one).

Pull them down, save the components, and reload to your hearts content. That's what I would do with someone else's reloads unless it was Erv, my best friend, engineer, whom I taught to reload.

Yeah the golden rule of shooting is you do NOT shoot other peoples reloads, unless they are lic & bonded for your protection. Sure it is supposed to be 23gr of 2400, but???
EVERY GOOD SHOOTER NEEDS TO BE A HANDLOADER.
