It's advantage over the .40-70 is the long-term guarantee of cheap and widely available brass (sized down .45-70s). It is not on you list of possibilities, but it should be.
I think so too. Got a Shiloh with a 34" heavy barrel in 40-65 and it's a joy to shoot.

I will third the 40-65 Winchester. I have one chambered in an old sporting Remington roller. Fun fun fun to shoot and easy on gun and shooter. 400 grain wind buckers down to a screaming light weight 250 or so will both do what you want.

I also have and have had several 45-70's and i still like it fine but ... the 40-65 has become a darlin for me. Low recoil, better wind bucking then either of my 38-55's. I also have a 45-120 or the 45 3.25 cartridge in my Hartford Shiloh and it delivers more of a good time then i wanna have very often.

    Happy Birthday.

I have used Shiloh's and C Sharps. Maybe next year I'll treat myself to a new one in a 32-40 or 40-70.
