    Gas generator propane conversion kits

We have Generac XP8000E 12000kw start 8000kw run gas generator.
Its enough to run the freezer, fridge a light or 2 and the TV for weather, emergency updates
And if needed can back that up with a 5500
    Generator
Anyway looking at the online kits to convert to tri fuel. The Nash kits seem to be rated well.
    Now to the questions
Have you bought and installed one of these
    How is/ does it work
Any issues or other things needed to purchase?
    Thanks

I've worked on them in the past. Most of the kits involve a spacer block that contains the ports for the propane / natural gas to be mixed into the air leading to the intake. The problems generally come from gasoline remaining in the carburetor and varnishing up. The problem appears when you attempt to switch back to gasoline operation. That's more of a fuel problem than a kit problem and the same thing happens if you leave gasoline in the carburetor (particularly ethanol - gasoline blends) for long periods of time.

There is a power reduction because: 1. the spacer block restricts air flow a bit so it can reduce performance even when running on gasoline. 2. propane produces less BTU's per weight of fuel than gasoline and natural gas produces less than propane.

However, propane and natural gas are MUCH more friendly to long term storage and cold starting, so there's a trade off there in reliability. Plus the blow-by from the propane contaminates the oil less so that the oil change intervals can usually be lengthened during long term operation.

Many years ago a friend did the conversion that you speak of.He took care of the gas evap problem very easily. He just put a petcock in the fuel line about two inches before the carb.Easy peasy.Just let the engine run the carb dry.Has`nt used anything but natural gas since.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.
