SIZER DIE QUESTION: does anyone have a Lyman .311 sizer die that can give me 2 measurements? The Plunger(if that is what it is called).....I need the dia. and the length.
georgerkahn, what lead alloy are you using in the 311291 mold and what dia. are they dropping?
My Ideal 311291 has a .301 nose /.315-.314 on the bands unsized WW water dropped ...not sure if that will work in my pre 64 30-30 carbine.Relatively new at this so I have GC's and Lee .309 ,.311 + .314 sizers. Can I also use this bullet in the .303 British?

I made up a dummy round and it will chamber in the 94 but with a little encouragement/gusto while cycling. Drops right into the H+R 158.I have both versions of 4198,IMR 3031,RE#7,IMR 4227 ,Win 748 and IMR 4895.The GC bullet weighs 180gr.Don't know if I should try just light plinking loads or make hunting loads. What velocity ceiling with WW water quenched to avoid leading? Deer ,black bear and perhaps a moose. With the bullet likely just touching the throat in the 94 couldn't one make specific slightly shorten the brass and adjust the crimping die to match? The ammo would then be gun specific but who cares as long as it's marked so there are no mixups.I've used 30gr/Win 748 with 180gr RN jacketed with no issues.

I have loaded 311-291's to 2300 fps in 30-40's. In the 30-30, I have used 32 grains of WW-748 for 2100 FPS from my 24" Winchester.

That 32gr of Win 748 is what I use for moose with 170gr jacketed .........kills e'm dead.
I have 3 different Lyman 311291 moulds to include a factory HP and every one of them is slightly different. My single cavity throws a acww .302 nose .310 body which shoots beautifully in my 06s but won’t chamber in my 1950s marlin .30-30. In fairness it won’t chamber my 311041 which is also .302 on the nose. I have a nose core mould for casting pure lead 311291 noses.
I picked up a 5 cavity in one of the group buys which gets a fair amount of use. I’ve never shot a deer with it though. My deer boolit in the 30-30 has been the 311041 (different rifle, a brand new micro groove I bought in 2008 for $200)and in the 06s the 311290.

Very pleasant to shoot and very accurate.
I had a buddy with me that had never shot a contender.
He was amazed at how accurate it was with cast...dale
Many, if not most, the old Ideal moulds were cut for Lyman #1 alloy which was an alloy containing copper. Thus there was considerable more shrinkage in the mould. That's why with a ternary alloy such as WWs which gives less shrinkage in the mould they cast at a larger size.
Indeed, if your 303 British has a groove diameter of .312 - .314 your cast 311291s may very well be useful in it. If you add 2% tin to the COWW alloy you should get a bit larger bullet of probable better use in the 303. Only one way to know.

My 311291 has a .100 length driving band ahead of the crimp groove. Should work with your .145 to the lands.
