The Bore Mop - When do you use it?

I own bore mops for all my barrel calibers and gauge sizes but I've never use one because I don't know when to use it or how it supposed to be used.
These soft fluffy mops seem to me to be inadequate for scrubbing a bore due to their loose fit in the bore.
They seem like over kill for delivering solvent into the bore as they would hold so much liquid.

That's a interesting question I have used them when super soaking a bore with both solvent or oil , but very seldom see the need a good patch usually takes care of my needs .

I occasionally use them to oil my bores.

I use them to mop out BP fouling at the range instead having to pick up a mess of dirty patches when I leave. One wet, one dry. Both will be filthy by the time you wrap up but they can be cleaned (mostly) every now and then.

I use them to clean cap&ball guns with hot water & soap.

I will run a mop through the barrel of a handgun if things are looking very dirty or if I think leading is a possibility. Easier to tell if there is a problem if the dirt is out of the way.

COTTON bore mops are used for a quick field cleaning without using patches.

Use one mop to wet the bore before brushing. This avoids dipping a dirty brush into the bore cleaner and contaminating it.

Use the wet cotton mop again to remove loosened crud after brushing, and use a different dry mop to soak up excess solvent before oiling the gun and putting away.

Clean used mops in isopropyl alcohol after use before returning to the field cleaning kit.

WOOL bore mops use used for OILING a CLEAN bore and chambers for storage, if revolver isn't going to be reloaded and holstered for carry.

..............I use the mops 99% of the time for oiling the bore after cleaning. The other 1% is used after shooting corrosive primed ammo (30-06, 8x57 & 7.62x54R) with a water/windex mix.

Bore mop: Check with the NSSA cannon guys. When using powder charges that are bagged you better use a worm and mop or blow your arm off. You should be able to figure it out or ..... 10

In addition to Outpost's excellent information I'll add that I primarily use a bore mop to oil a cleaned barrel for storage.

I use them to apply solvent to a bore chamber instead of a jag or brush. A lot of todays solvents are good at removing copper fouling and destroy a bronze brush in short order. Also work well at times for other chores. I had a 10" and 6" cleaning rod and bore mops in my tool box at work. Made cleaning parts much easier when needed. I find the mops to give a better coat of solvents in a dirty bore.
