    Just out of curiosity..........

Just out of curiosity........ I wonder why Miha (in particular) and other mold makers don't add any of the group buy designs to their stock as a regular stock item?

I do know that Al Nelson has added several to his stock after a group buy over the years, just curious, thoughts?

I wondered the same thing but came to the conclusion that he don't want a lot of product sitting around. He can set up and mass produce an array of molds on demand seems like-with no problem. I'm sure he keeps the designs on file.

AAMOF, there are several discussion threads about molds Miha did before (some nearly a decade ago) that he is considering rerunning, and the honchos mentioned that the cherries for the molds are in inventory, and it's simply a matter of there being enough interest to do them again.

    Just out of curiosity..........

I have seen Miha do this before with group buys that have been larger. If it’s popular enough from his overstock run he will produce more when needed (and usually offers a discount to any preorders he can get on the re-run). He’s done this a few times on his 68 clone from what I’ve seen.

Case in point is the link below of a mold we did a buy on last year. Took us a while to get enough and he still has 5 left so I doubt he’ll be itching to make more till there is demand.

Simpler and easier, and a lot less money to update the existing web site list of surplus inventory. Not sure how up to date the on-line list is.

I believe the issue is stock.
The more items you have in your standard catalog, the more items you need to keep stock of.
Its not cost effective to run one or two molds even if you already have the tooling. So that means running 10 molds or more even when you may only sell one mold a month.
With 40 designs that is a lot of molds sitting on the shelf which translates to a pile of money.

Group buys sell a lot because its not a standard mold.
Kinda like StarBucks selling their Pumpkin Spice Latte. They sell a bunch in Oct, Nov and Dec, but if it was a year around thing they wouldn't sell as much on a regular basis

I think miha still does this on the side as a two man operation. Stock requires considerable investment, whereas doing group buy runs you know you will sell all of them, except maybe a handful who backed out, and it's guaranteed someone will pop up wanting some after people start posting pics.

I know that NOE's biggest problem is finding a place for their extensive inventory of moulds.... They run a Group Buy, produce extras, and put them in stock on a regular basis.... It's an expensive thing to do, but great for their customers....

I would be happy if you could order an out of stock mold. Most of us are used to waiting for a mold.

I think the problem is that to produce moulds economically, most companies do a "batch" at a time to consolidate machining costs.... Making single moulds to order would not only be more expensive to produce.... but would require a "real time" tracking system for orders, compared to Group Buys.... JMO....
