    Amazon and their reviews

    Amazon and their reviews

I bought a new Vehicle and no longer need my Hornady Rapid Vehicle Safe
So I go to Amazon and read the reviews. They are terrible and mostly not even true.

    Apparently, folks can't or won't

    Read instructions
Don’t know how things work and can't figure it out
They are gorillas and tighter is always better
Screws are stripped because they won’t tighten up. When they are bolts with nuts that have come off.

    I was totally blown away

    Thanks for letting me vent
    Rant over

You always gotta take those reviews with a grain of salt. A lot of reviews on Amazon are bought and paid for by the manufacturer, many are idiots leaving a bad PRODUCT review because they weren't happy with the shipping, and many are like the ones you saw. They just can't figure stuff out without having their hand held.

    ^^^ That.
I read a lot of Amazon reviews and if you read the one and two star reviews you can see that many are due to not understanding a product, slow shipping, or just being a complete idiot. Some of those reviews may be correct.
I look at the five and four star reviews and total that percentage. If it totals more than 70-75% then I accept it as a good product.

Look at broadhead reviews sometime. Take a broadhead that is a world standard for accuracy and toughness ( slick trick, muzzy, qad exodus) and a alarming number will review them as worthless junk out of their "perfectly tuned" cutting edge bow. Makes you feel bad for the deer.

Check out the Q&As sometime. It amazes me how many people will go to the trouble to reply to a question just to say, "I don't know."

Be careful about the positive 5 stars too. Undoubtedly, there are companies giving devices away for a positive review. Notices are at bottom of review and are on various sites besides Amazon.

    But yea people are stupid

I love the Amazon reviews. I write some myself on products that I've found to be spectacular, especially if I have a good grasp on why the product is spectacular. I receive lots of questions posted about a review I posted about a wireless external AM antenna. It's works great to pull in stations if you are on the edge of their range, But the product description is very poorly written and leaves a buyer with many questions of how/when/why it works.

FYI, to get quality info from reviews, you need to dissect a large group of the reviews...and looking for a common theme. If many reviews state the screws come loose, then it's likely screws will come loose. Also, there are a few hobby experts that post reviews on Amazon, and you can tell right away from their posts, that they know what they are talking about and the info they offer is usually quite valuable.

I recall reading one review from a hobby expert about a third world/survival type AM/FM radio I was interested in, while he said it did OK, he recommended another radio that wasn't in that catagory, A sony Pocket sized AM/Fm radio...it was half the price and I ordered one, it is an incredible radio, I have refered it to many of my Am radio listening friends, and most have been impressed on how it can pull in stations other, more expensive radios can't pull in.

Try buying a modem or router.

If Reading the reviews on Rapid Safe .
You won't want to buy It.
I know for a fact most of the bad reviews are not justified.

"Try buying a modem or router. "
    no thanks.

I imagine there are some products where the amazon reviews are overwhelmingly incorrect, I don't recall any right now?

My most recent purchase where I researched Amazon reviews, was for a replacement inner door handle assembly for my chevy Pickup, which I learned they regularly fail [break]. Per the reviews, it was evident to go with the Dorman replacement, whereas all the other makers were more prone to breaking, including GM's expensive replacement. I should find out today, how it fits and installs, ...and in time, we'll see how the dorman lasts?

If it’s the Sony ICF-S10MK2 it’s a great tough rugged radio. I used move fir 4 years constantly while on the road. Out of 5000 reviews it had a 4.5 stars out of a 5 star rating! I paid $13.49 for mine at Walgreens.. Todd

Most of the bad reviews aren't true.

Yep, I have the S10MK2, as well as the new (redesigned aesthetically, but same size, same circuitry) ICF-P26. The S10MK2 is no longer being manufactured. Both have great reception and incredibly long battery life). They retail at $19 but I have bought a couple P26 (for gifts) they were "used/returns" from a Amazon warehouse deal for $9.99 each

Sometimes the shipping issues reflect directly on the product.

I bought a roof rack for my SUV and it arrived badly damaged. Sent it back. Second one arrived badly damaged. Both were damaged because the manufacturer used inferior packing materials and processes.

I searched online and found that many other customers were receiving damaged roof racks from other vendors all due to the maker of the roof rack not packaging it properly.

In that case, the damage in shipping reflected directly on the product. What good is a well-designed product if the manufacturer can't get it to the customer without damage?

Amazon wouldn't let me leave a poor review based on getting three damaged roof racks in a row. I think they are wrong.

Amazon is slipping lately, anyways. I have been a Prime member for nearly a decade and in the last few months I have had to send back a few items due to damage or poor quality. Have never had to do that ever before. Also, the shipping times have nearly doubled for me. Nearly everything I ordered in the past arrived in 2-3 days and now the last few small things I ordered took nearly ten days.

I'm now using WalMart and other sources more frequently.

You have to do your due diligence w/ reviews regardless of the site. W/ Amazon you have to sift through a lot of reviews because of the volume they sell. This is both good and bad. They do a good job of flagging reviews from people who received the product for free.

What bothers me is they lump products together. Last year I needed a larger Pelican case. And they’d recently release their Air series cases. I wanted to read reviews on the 1615. But they lumped almost all Pelican cases together. This is a huge waste of everyone’s time. They do it so the review numbers are larger and you click on the product. This happens w/ all types of products.

Another thing that bothers me is people that review a product after unboxing it. You get the typical “this thing is awesome”. I want to know how a product holds up. I reviewed the 1615 case after 60 days of use. This included two international flights and around twenty domestic, including layover plane changes. The review was very positive at that point. After 90 more days, and countless flights, I updated my review again because I started having issues w/ the case. I’m due to update the review again because it’s been about a year, lost count of flights, since I last updated it. I’m going to raise the rating because while it has issues it’s stabilized, meaning no more damage. I don’t expect most people to do this. But they should use the product before reviewing it. And my review for the 1615 still comes up when looking at other model cases.

They’re trying to do a better job of not allowing reviews for shipping damage. I know because I was purchasing Disney Cars, the movie, die cast toys for my sons. These are opened and played w/ hard. But I tired leaving reviews about the blister packs arriving damaged. People collect these toys. I was trying to warn them because I know the value goes down if a corner is slightly creased let alone the blister pack being taped up. Amazon did not allow any of these reviews to be posted. You can rate a marketplace seller but they do a very job of giving you access to those reviews.

I’m not bashing Amazon in anyway. I enjoy reading the reviews and questions. The questions are always good for a laugh. When looking at tools you can tell a homeowner from a professional in an instant. If you really want a laugh look at “Nest” thermostat reviews. I don’t know of any professionals that recommend them. I don’t know of any companies in my area that still install them. Yet you have tons of positive reviews. And people w/ no clue answering questions about them. Maybe I just find them funny because I’m in the industry

I still have all of my Pelican cases. And so does every other tech that works for us. None have ever been stolen and we travel worldwide.

But there’s a few things to point out. You should always be at the baggage carousel before the bags start coming out. Even if you’re in the back of the plane there’s enough time to get to the carousel. Even in large airports. I typically spend more time waiting for my bags in larger airports.

I honestly don’t worry about the cases getting stolen. I worry about the TSA breaking and stealing the tools in them. They’ve broken many meters. And I typically lose a tool each flight. As it happens I flew yesterday. And I’m missing yet another five in one screwdriver. I don’t want them anywhere near my bags because this happens all the time.
