H&R 30-30 100grn cast loads??

Finally found some time to mess with my H&R 30-30 topper.

Diggin threw my junk I found an old Ideal 30810100 mold, Casts .311 at
102 grns with hard lead. The beat up old mold casts a nice boolit!

Figure why not run a few, cast 50 of them. Probably load up 40 of them.

I have several pounds of Varget on hand so what would be a good starting point for a load?
I know the boolits a bit light for the 30-30 but it might work well or it might not?
Not really looking for a full house load, just a starting mild to middle load.

I guess just a goofing around hit the can if you can load, yet still knowing your shooting a 30-30.

Varget may be a bit slow for what your looking for, especially with the light for caliber bullet. Do you have red dot, unique, herco? Rl7 works well with 170 gr range bullets, no experience with it with 100gr. I use 5 to 6 gr red dot for my light boolits. Accurate and not position sensitive. Bullseye would be good as well.

Varget will be way too slow I wouldn't even bother trying.

My plinking load using the 3118 bullet is 6.5 grains of Red Dot. Load Chronys at 1450 fps from a 22 inch carbine barrel. Pistol primers give me better accuracy.

3118 as I cast 'em of 50-50 lead & wheelweights weigh about 119 grains, so your 100 grainers could stand another 2-3 tenths of a grain.

I don't have a H & R 30-30 - wish I did. But for my Winchester 94 Ranger or Marlin 336SC, I use a 115 grain flat nose. I've tried Bulls Eye, Unique and Red Dot and Red Dot has proven to be the most accurate for me out of my two rifles. 6.3 grains with the 115 grain I use works great. I use Red Dot with a 110 grain boolit out of my old 1905 GEW98 8mm Mauser as well. Most of my plinking is at 25 to 50 yards and the 30-30 with the above loads are a real pleasure to plink with.

You'll have a lot of fun with what you are working with in the H & R but I think you need to be looking at a faster powder - Unique, Red Dot, Bulls Eye, Green Dot

I have the same mold and have never gotten very good accuracy with those little bullets for anything but 50 yds. or less. As the distance goes further they begin to open up group sizes pretty rapidly.

Another vote for Red Dot here. I like mine from 4.5 to 6.5 depending on bullet and how fast I want to run.

6 gr. of bullseye did the trick! Nice accurate load. Shot well out of the H&R.

Got a Savage model 219 in .30-30 that I`ve only shot #311041, guess I might try something lighter.Robert

Same here I also have a savage 219 in .30-30 it likes the lyman 311359 115gr spire point with 7.5grs of unique or the lyman 311008 flat point with the same charge. 25 yards is normally one ragged hole for 5 shots. If your not paying attention you never notice recoil.
