    50/70 Rolling Block Carbine Loads

Has anyone used 500 grain bullets in a 50/70 Rolling Block carbine?
I just got a carbine and the only bullets I have are .515 500gr.
I want to use a light charge of FFG, a full load would have severe recoil.
Would about 40 grains of Goex FFG be a safe load? The gun is in good
    condition. Paul

Several of us on this forum own 50-70 Government trapdoors so if you hit the search button, you'll find several threads on that very classic cartridge. I use a 450gr bullet from a Lee mould that I shoot as cast under a load of 42gr of Pyrodex to replicate a 70gr blackpowder load in my 1868 trapdoor.

And I see you are a long time member and lower post count member so hopefully the rest of us can help you out also.

I've got a 50-70 trapdoor. I use the Lee 450 grain boolit with 5744, Accurate has load data compatible with trapdoors. I suspect it would work in a rolling block. I think they also had data with their 2495 powder at even lower pressure. Not sure if the 2495 is still available.
