Powder choice for 264gr gas check 38/55 boolit

I recently restored a vintage Savage Model 1895 in 38/55 cal. I have been seatching for the best handload. I have been trying a 264gr cast boolit with gas check and getting ok group of 2 1/4". I'm looking at trying a different powder...Reloader 7. My Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook shows a powder designated as Rx7....is that Alliant Reloader7 or Accurate No 7??? Looking at websites for both powder manufacturers offers no answer. Help!

Rx7 is Reloder 7. I use that same bullet in a .38-55 Browning Traditional Hunter single shot. I didn't get great accuracy with Reloder 7, but it may be worth a try in your gun. I've gotten best accuracy in my rifle with the following powders: 5744, IMR4198, and H4895.

+1 on what lotech said. My 'go-to' for duplication of BP ballistics in my 38-55 Highwall is 4198 (either IMR or H). A plain-based 275 grainer (old, old Ohaus mold) over 20.2 grains shoots to the same POA as with 50 gr of FFg.

I am new to loading 38-55 but 9.2 grs of Unique with the Lee 250gr boolits is all day accurate fun in my JES rebored 1894 Win. I do need to get some 4198 to try for hunting loads although I'm sure a deer can't stop one of the Unique loads at pistol range.

I normally 3 levels of velocity with a 250 plain based boolet in my JES rebored 336.
10 gr Universal or Unique @ 1220 fps for plinking/target. light enough my "light for his age" 6th grader grandson shoots it with ease.
21-4198 with a tuft of dacron @1400 for normal woods hunting, full penetration on deer
32-3031 @1600 for hunting when I really want to smack something. I could go up in velocity, but 15-1600 will give max penetration with lead based slugs so why punish my shoulder.

Just ordered the mold and gas checks for my Marlin 38-55. Kind of interested in reports from those that have used it. I have the Lee mold but always felt that this mold with gas checks could really ring out the caliber and still be used with lower velocity loads like the Unique loads. I have a gas check mold I use for the 32-20 and don't always use gas checks in it and they work. The Lee bullet with about 22 grains of 4198 will shoot as good at 50 yards as I can hold with my receiver sight.

36.5 grains IMR 4198? That has to be a typo.

Yeah, he must have meant 26.5 grains. Kind of a large error!

I use either IMR 3031 26.5 grs or unique 9.0 grs with Arsenals version of the Lyman and have pretty good results in a original first year production high wall.

I use 28.0grs of IMR3031 over the Lyman #375449GC cast of Linotype. Gives me great accuracy out of a Winchester 1981-94-Chief Crazy Horse. Under 2" at 100yrds from the bench. That's 5 shots.
